I've "rescued" an old photograph with the name M. A. RAWLS of Creston, IA
written on the back. The photograph was taken at the Spurr Studio in
Creston, IA and is dated 1886. The gentleman in the photograph appears to
be in his 30's at the time the photograph was taken. The only RAWLS
individual I find in Creston during that time frame is Margaret A. RAWLS who
was the wife of Dr. John Alonzo RAWLS. I'm of the opinion that this is
Margaret's husband John. Based on limited research I was able to gather the
following information regarding John and his family:
John Alonzo RAWLS MD was b. 19 Nov 1848 in Hancock Co., IN to parents
Jonathan B. RAWLS (b. 7 Aug 1825 in Ohio-d. 18 Apr 1866 in Peru, IA) and
Phebe Starbuck COFFIN (b. 12 Nov 1820-d. 5 Sept 1905 in Plattsmouth, NE).
John was one of 6 children born to this couple including, Mary J.; John
Alonzo; Loretta Florenda; Eliza F.; Carlos or Carlas Alverin; and Adolphus
C. RAWLS, all born between 1841 and 1859. It appears that John's Mother
might have been married previously and had three additional children
including Mary J.; Thomas C.; and Rufus F. WHITE all born between 1838 and
1840.
John married Margaret "Nancy" Agnes MCDOWELL (b. 26 Jan 1851 in Washington
Co. PA) on 13 Jun 1876 in Madison Co. IA. John was Margaret's second
husband. Margaret and John had 4 children including, Bonnie Blanche; Daisy
Glenn or Glen; Elizabeth Faye; and Berenice or Bernice Margaret RAWLS, all
born between 1877 and 1886 in Iowa. John died 25 Oct 1910 in Kent, WA and
is buried in the Lake View Cemetery in Seattle, WA and Margaret died in
Creston, IA in 1933 and is buried in the Graceland Cemetery in Creston.
I am hoping to locate someone from this RAWLS Family so that the photograph
can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family,
or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
