I posted some of this before, but maybe this will help a new researcher (and
me)!
George W. HENDRICKS is shown on the 1850 census of Buck Crk Twp, Hancock Co
IN, age 30 b. KY. I have his CW pension file (very thick), but unfortunately
does not state his place of birth, nor parents' names. Listed with him are
the following persons:
Sarah E. age 31 b. KY
Nancy J. 7/12 IN (think this should be Nancy A)
Michael age 78 cooper b VA
Jane 64 "
Sarah 34 b KY
Rosannah 8 b IN
Oliver 4 b "
Thomas BURROWS (BURRIS?) age 32 b NY
John " 18 b IN
Hiram " 12 "
I *think* that the elderly Michael married Jenny DANCE and she is likely a
second wife. Also, this family or at least, Michael, may be a descendant of
Peter and Maria Guthin (sp) HEINRICH, HENDRICKS, HENRY who someone has listed
on either
Ancestry.com or the LDS site.
There are two additional children listed on the 1860 census with George and
Sarah E: Michael age 6 and Susan May age 1.
I have tried to connect this family with Isaac HENDRIX age 79 b NC, shown on
the 1850 census of Buck Crk Twp, Hancock Co IN, and also with Isaac's next
door neighbor, Frederick HENDRIX/HENDRICKS age 39 b. KY. So far, the only
*connection* I have found is that they used the same family doctor in some
instances...namely, William F. COLLINS.
I have also tried to find an ancestor of sorts, cousin, great uncle, etc.,
who would qualify as a DNA participant. The Isaac HENDRICKS, b. 7 Aug.1840 in
Hendricks Co IN and who may have been the 10 year old on the 1850 census
with old Isaac age 79, had, at the time of his death, one son, and that son
married late in life to a lady many years his senior
Isaac was difficult to track as there was an Isaac HENDRICKS in Marion Co
IN, which is adjacent to Hancock Co, who was in different locations in Marion
Co on the various censuses. His CW file revealed the confirmation needed to
certify that this was the person I was paper trailing; he worked in various
locations and lived in different households. His disablility prevented him
from doing meaningful labor at times and it is likely he was quite poor. He was
in partnership with Robert DAY (ditching or digging wells). The old Isaac
age 79 b NC and who *may* have been his father has living with him, in 1850, a
James SKIMERHORN age 17, Jeremiah WALKER age 27 and young Isaac age 10. I
find that there are SCHEMEHORNS in Eel River Twp, Hendricks Co IN, on the
1850 census. This *still* does not prove that young Isaac is the son of old
Isaac. He may be a son of Frederick and Aphra OWINGS b NC who lived next door.
Aphra d. before 1859 and Frederick then Mary Jane Kennedy UNDERWOOD; they
are my g-grandparents.
This is turning out to be more wordy than I anticipated, but if there is a
midwest ancestor to be found, it could possibly come from the family of George
or Frederick HENDRICKS. Frederick did have a son, George, b. abt 1839, and
the elder George (1860 census) shows a Michael b. abt. 1854. The 1850 census
lists an Oliver HENDRICKS who may be a son of the younger Sarah HENDRICKS in
the George HENDRICKS household.
My great-uncle, Francis Abraham HENDRICKS had only girls who survived,
several boys d. in infancy. Brother of Francis, Franklin Frederick HENDRICKS, had
one son, William. I recently learned that the only child in William's
household was his stepson. So that line is a deadend.
I suppose I will be embarking on another paper trail searching Michael,
George and Oliver HENDRICKS, unless someone has another suggestion :)
Hopefully someone will recognize a name which may relate to an ancestor. If
interested, I can supply some more facts if someone should want additional
info on the above persons.
