I also looked for Clanfords, Allens and Callahans, but found no one to match the census
names, in fact, no Clanfords at all. I looked at the appropriate census, btw, and I would
translate the family in the Nathan Crawford hh above John Dennis as Mary & John
Gallaher, not Callahan, but I couldn't find anything on them either.
Interestingly, under Crawford, the only book entry is:
p. 338. Center Township
"The following names but no dates were found in History of Hancock County by George
Richman, published 1916, as being buried in South Street or Greenfield's Old
Cemetery:
Barnett, Robert
Crawford, Nathan
Meek, Cornwall; Meek, w/o Cornwall; Meek, Jeremiah
Pierson, Harry
Rutherford, James; w/o James; William; H. J."
Good luck and good hunting!

Subject: [INHANCOC] Need Hancock Co. information on the Dennis family abt 1840-1850
I am looking for information on a John H. Dennis and Harriet C. Clanford in
Hancock Co., Indiana. They applied for a license on June 19, 1845 in Hancock
Co., Indiana. Harriet was born in Yates Co., NY and she would be the
sister to my 2nd great-grandmother. ( Who married in Henry Co. )
The Clanford family came to Indiana from Yates Co., NY shortly after 1840.
I found information in the Hancock Co. IN court records on some
guardianships for the orphans of a John Dennis. ( I am not sure this would
be their children) Because in the 1850, 1860 & 70 census I found them
living with their guardians or on their own. Their ages were at least 6-8
years older than the marriage date of 1845.
Here is what I found:
Hancock Co. (IN) Court Records, Probate Order Book A 1843-1850 (page 52)
Record page 296 Joseph Mathers is appointed the guardian of John Dennis,
and Martin Van Buren Dennis infant sons of John Dennis Dec. May 13, 1847.
Hancock Co. (IN) Court Recrods, Comp. Rec. Probate Bk. 1, 1853-1859 (page
133)
Book page 80 J. Mathers the gdn. of John and Martin V.B. Dennis minor heirs
of John Dennis dec. states that his wards were orphans and that he did on
May 13, 1847 bind out his wards to Nathan Crawford. On Nov. 2 1847 Martin
was re-bound out to John Allen. July 1853.
1850 Hancock Co., IN Centre Twp.
23/23 C.Line 08
Nathan Crawford 45 b. OH Farmer $6000
Margaret 40 b. KY
Armelda 16 b. IN
Marion 14 b. IN
Mary Callahan 21 b. IN
John Callahan 23 b. IN Farmer
Nelson Callahan 13 b. IN
John Dennis 11 b. OH

100/102 C.line 04
John Allan 27 b. IN Farmer $600
Elizabeth 19 b. OH
Martin V. Dennis 08 b. OH
I am not sure this would be John & Harriet's children. I have been unable
to locate John or Harriet in the cemetery or census records.
Thanks for any help.
