This letter sent from Hancock Co. IN, April 12, 1857, was written to James
F. Smith, son of Leander and Nancy (Buchanan) Smith. James was apparently
born in Connersville, (Fayette Co.) IN.
James Smith later received several Civil War-era letters from family when
he was recovering from wounds/illness, and at that time the letters were
addressed to James Smith, Co. C. 9th Reg., Invalid Corp, Burnside Barracks,
Indianapolis, IN. You can read some of these letters at various Genconnect-Rootsweb
Bio. pages to include Louisa Co., Marshall Co., and Jasper Co. (Newton)
IA. James apparently later moved to KS and WA. I have one more to post
to this G-R Hancock Co. IN Bio. Page.
State of Indiana, Hancock Co., April 12th/'57
Dear Cousin.
It is with pleasure that I take my pen in hand to inform you that we are
all well at present hoping these few lines may find you all the same. I
received yours a few days ago and was glad to hear from you. There has
been some sickness here this Spring. Mostly Whooping cough. I have sold
two horses this Spring for $250. Daniel Y. Cuningham (sp?) told me when
I wrote to tell your father that medicine Done his hands no good. He is
wide awake and full of fleas. Jim ____is rite side up with care, so is
Catherine ?Garmer (?Garner,?Farmer). Jim you had better come back and marry
Catherine for she is a fine girl. She is industrious, good, matured and
will make a feller feel happy in his old days. There aint many finer in
old Hancock than Catherine. She wrote you a letter not long ago and I am
a feard you won't git it for she directed it to Marshel (Marshall) County
Iowa, it may be if you go to Mary etta you may git it But what town she
directed it to I don't know. Look out for Catherine is rite and no mistake.
Weather is quite mild today. Today is Ester Sunday so I thought if I would
git a few Shanghai Eggs and eat I would feel better but I feel worse than
I did so I will write on.
Jim you Look well accusing me of gitting (?Hannah) Thompson a young one.
I will Tell you whose I think it is, it is Either Ed Perins or Jim Smith
for I never have any on the road as Long as that one was. But if you and
Ed won't claim it just Lay it to me and I will have the Blunt. Jim if you
see her tell her I have not forgot her yet when I think of her, tell her
I would like to see her and her little Dishwasher and talk to her as I
have done heretofore.
The people say that Bill Scoot broke his girl's leg and run away but how
true it is I can't say. I won't tell the girl's name.
Jim, I am on the ?Colter farm, it is different from what it did when you
left not much neither. (?).
Write soon. Don't fail. Write when you are coming back.
No more But Remains Yours Truly,
Oliver Smith
