Regarding the Primitive Baptist Church in Hancock County
Hi. Maybe this will help. It is from my family history, "Indiana Bound," and
concerns John H. Caldwell.
A fervent Baptist, he aided in the founding of the Mt. Gilead Church on 15
Aug. 1827 (Richman 201), and was among the founders of the Shiloh Primitive
Baptist Church in 1841. He subsequently served as Trustee and Deacon of that
church (Richman 62-63, 505-7). His brother David was a preacher there as
well (Harden 357). The church land south of Greenfield was donated to the
Baptist church in 1854, although the Baptist congregation itself moved to
Greenfield in 1890 and the old church and cemetery was then sold to the
Christian church when it became known as the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church.
It is now the Mt. Lebanon Church. Much of our family is buried in its
adjoining cemetery, including John H. Caldwell. His headstone there states
"John the Baptist J.H. Caldwell."
All best
