THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, December 7, 1922,
Volume XLVII, Number 4, Page 4, Columns 3 & 4, 'DEATH'S HARVEST-HARRIS.'
[Transcribed on February 28, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file
in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
John B. HARRIS was born August 18, 1842, at Swanton, Ohio. He was one of a family of four
boys and seven girls.
At an early age of twelve he was left to shift for himself. He migrated to Bloomfield
where he remained until the outbreak of the Civil War. Anxious to serve his country he
volunteered, but was rejected, but before the second year of the war was in progress he
was received into COMPANY H, 59TH REGIMENT, and served until the close of the war. He
participated in forty-two battles and skirmishes, when he was honorably discharged.
On January 29, 1867, he was married to Eliza PLUMMER. To this union were born four
children, the oldest of who died in infancy. Two sons and a daughter remain. His wife
died April 10, 1899.
He was again united in marriage to Martha HEROD, on April 10, 1900, and in February 1917,
he was again left without a companion.
The remaining five years of his life he spent with his sons.
On November 29, 1922, he answered the roll call, for which he had long been waiting, at
the age of eighty years, three months and twelve days.
He leaves to mourn his departure two sons and a daughter, all of whom reside in Washington
Township; also three granddaughters, an aged sister, Adeline SHONER, of Toledo, Ohio,
survive.
The funeral services were held at Prairie Chapel Church December 1, 1922, conducted by
Rev. W. H. THOMPSON, of Lyons. Interment in the Chapel Cemetery.
