If you have found the articles already you are a better researcher than me. If you only
knew how long I looked before my Aunt Mable found the newspaper article. I had ladies
looking in Indy, and Greene Co.
The copy that I transcribed was from Norma Purcell and given to me by my Aunt Mable Crites
Johnson May 2008. Aunt Mable knew that I was looking for the orginal article.
Norma's family used to own the newspaper in Bloomfield.
After I started my family genealogy I found the short paragraph in the History book. I
then started looking for the orginal newspaper to verify the story. I was confused by the
date in the Greene County History Book, and that didn't help with finding the
newspaper article. I don't know why the date in the book is off by one year, except
that the book editors were probably taking the story from family members, or maybe someone
just made a mistake in typing. Which we know can happen.
The Hunter family were often told by Grandma Hunter that after the men had served in the
Civil War they survived only to be killed in the explosion. Daniel Washington &
Lurana (Starks) Hunters had a family of thirteen children, twelve boys and one girl.
Their sons; Afred, William James,Hiram, Columbus Jefferson, James Starks, George
Washington, and David Lindley all served in the Civil War. Two other sons had died of
measles brought home by two of their sons from the Army training camp at Gosport,
Indiana.
Almost all of the men and boys that died in the Hunter Mill explosion either served in the
Civil War or their fathers had served. (I have been working on a complete list, and I will
post it when I am done.)
