Birth: Dec. 8, 1825
Death: Nov. 15, 1903
Nancy A. QUILLEN was born December 8, 1825; died November 15, 1903; aged 77 years 11
months and 10 days. She was born in Boone County, Indiana and came to Greene County with
her parents and family when a small girl and from then till the time of her death was a
resident of Taylor Township. She was married to William QUILLEN, Jr., October 15, 1840,
her maiden name being STONE. To that union thirteen children were born, six died in
infancy, seven attained their majority; but four died in early manhood; and only one son
and two daughters survive her. Her husband died eight years ago and since that time she
had lived with her children, most of the time with her oldest daughter, Mrs. Sarah E.
JEFFERS. From first to last she suffered three strokes of paralysis.
She was a pioneer of the county and the last of a large family, in fact a double family of
half brothers and sisters. She shared all the hardships of pioneer life. She gathered the
flax and converted it into clothing for her children. She sheared the wool from the back
of the sheep and made it into clothes for winter wear for her family.
She was a member of the Church of Christ and held her membership at Antioch from which
place her funeral was conducted November 17, by Rev. Frank SILVERS, of Lyons, after which
her remains were laid away in the old family cemetery beside her husband and children.
She lived to see three generations of her descendants and lived to see eleven green mounds
which held the remains of her companion and ten children. All was done that could be done
for her while here on earth and now that she has gone to her eternal home may we, her
children, so live that we may meet her some day bye and by.
