Has any progress been made on either of these issues? I'm a descendant of both William
and Martha's daughter Nancy as well as Martha's son Leander, so I'm especially
interested to find answers.
I know Leander's death record claims William was his father, but obviously that
can't be right. As far as I've seen, he always claimed his father was from Indiana
on the censuses (and his death record claims Greene County, IN), but I'm not really
sure that means much. After all, his brother William and sister Nancy never put South
Carolina for their father's birthplace on a census if I recall correctly (Nancy did
once put North Carolina, however).
As for William Asbury's parents or siblings, I have no idea. I've been given the
suggestion to go out to the National Archives and go through his full Civil War records to
find out that information, but I'm from Indiana (and I imagine you are as well), so
that's not much of an option at the moment. I'm trying to search through the 1850
census for William Porter's around the same age from South Carolina, but I'm in
the early stages of that.
I have an additional question: Does anyone know what happened to their daughters Margaret
and Sarah?
I'm not sure if anyone would be interested, but I'm currently working on compiling
a tree of all descendants of William Asbury Porter. If anyone has any information
they'd like to contribute, I'd greatly appreciate it!
