from the 1898 report, page 1661, 1898Oct4, Jerry Coakley, cause falling slate, hand cut,
Hartwell mine, Pike county, nonfatal
Slate is dark shale lying next to the coal beds. It contains impressions of the plant life
of distant ages, proving the vegetable origin of coal
from the 1908 report, page 253, 1908Oct30, Jerry Coakly, age 55, occupation miner, wife
and 4 children, mashed through chest by mine car, Vandalia No.5 mine, Greene county,
serious nonfatal accident (he may of died later)
This is all the information that I have on these accidents. A newspaper article may have
more information about the 1908 accident
