Hi Kristi-
What a great photo! I have a funny question - did your grandmother ever say how it was
that her sister Mary Ruth ended up standing between her and Gaylord in the photo? ;-)
Your William McClennan Sheffler was 1st cousins with my great grandfather Henry L
Sheffler.
Their fathers Jacob L. Sheffler and Levi Warren Sheffler were both sons of Frederick
Sheffler in Pennsylvania.
The Calculus makes you and me 4th cousins once removed.
I have never seen this photo, but after looking at it and adding your identities, I have
some "calculated guesses" on the photo. Maybe we can contact some of the other
descendants to see if they have copies of this photo and if they can confirm any of this.
My first assumption is that all of William McClennan's kids are present here. Of
them, still to be identified yet are Homer, Ira, Ora, Charles, Margaret, and Ralph.
I noticed a lot of them wearing white suits and it seems to be the kids of William,
perhaps this was planned? Or coincidence, just the way of the time?
Based on ages I have on my information, spouses and kids...
I'll start with the "maybe" first. Two possibilities for #30:
William's youngest son Ralph 28 at the time, or possibly William's grandson Lew
(Homer's oldest son), about 18 at the time.
My first thought is it is Ralph if all of William McClennan's kids are present (if so,
Homer's son Lew would not be there...).
In 1935, William's son Homer was about 46, his wife Ada Isola was deceased (just that
year; or very ill at the time of the photo). His sons were about 18, 14, and 10. His
daughers were about 21, 20, and 16.
So, I think Homer is #31, daughters Mary Louise and Dorothy Claire are #32 and #33, but I
don't know where oldest daughter Martha might be. Is the photo cut off on the right?
If there is another female to the right that could be her.
Edgar would be #34, and Robert would be the one sitting on the ground in front of them
(Lost track of the numbering because the pic might not be fully visible to me).
I based this calculated guess on Homer's age and the fact that he has a lot of teens
around him and no wife in the photo. I also have an engagement announcement in a
newspaper for daughter Dorothy Claire in 1943 and although it is eight years later the
photo looks very much like #33 in this photo. (She would be about 16 here)
More later...
