Hi Don. I don't have an answer for you but perhaps a clue. John Maxwell is mentioned
several times in the "History of Greene and Sullivan Co.s" Goodspeed 1884 page
690 has this to say: "This division of the county, known as Cass Township{Sullivan
Co.}, is the eastern of the central, tier of townships, and is bounded on the north by
Jackson Township; on the south by Jefferson Township on the west by Hamilton Township; and
on the east by Greene County. From north to
south on the east portion, it is seven miles in extent, and from east to west on the
southern portion it is the same; but from east to west on the northern portion, and from
north to south on the western portion, it is about six miles in extent, a section a mile
square being chopped out of the northwest corner for the benefit of Hamilton, which
section should be restored to Cass, to which it rightfully belongs. The township was
formed from Jackson and Haddon Townships in 1850, and the first officers were: Trustees;
John Maxwell, John G. McBride and James A. McGill; Clerk, John H. Wilson; Assessor,
William G. Moss."
It is entirely possible this John Maxwell is the father of your John Maxwell. as stated
above, John Maxwell was a trustee, your John was born in 1847...
also, the 1860 Sullivan Co., In. Census shows John Maxwell (57) and Mary M. Maxwell (42)
Edward (33) Isaac (25) Friend R. (24) William P. (17) Marshall (15) John (2) and Rebecca
Benefiel (61) in the same household.
