Jack, that's a good question. I have been wondering the same thing. Was
it land grants? However, I can't find a land grant for my
GreatGrandfather Henry Southard when he came from NC in 1850/1851. Also,
the land in Greene County was mostly deposits of coal. (someone jump in
here now and correct me because I am not certain of this, just something
I read in passing). So my thinking is that they didn't go there to grow
crops. My thoughts about my Greatgrandfather was that he must have gone
there so he could mine coal because to my knowledge he wasn't in any of
the professions. Another thought was that things were beginning to heat
up over the slave issue and people knew that war was imminent so they
were just trying to move further away from it. Anyone else have any
ideas?

as a place to settle? Was it land grants?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks!
