Hi folks, looking for info re: the above surnames, the Cavins/Gainey clans
came to Greene Co. early 1800's....My GGG, Grandmother, Susan Gainey was
born in Pulaski co., Kentucky on Jan 1.1809. Her family came to Lawrence co.,
Indiana in 1819, her father was Aden Gainey. She married my paternal GGG
Grandfather, Samuel Cavins on December 22, 1825. They eventually settled in
Jackson township ,moving on to Bloomfield, In. in 1835. He was elected
associate judge of the circuit court, also serving as clerk and recorder of
the court, as well as county auditor. In 1836 he was commissioned as colonel
of the Forty-ninth Regiment of Indiana militia, holding the office until his
60th year. They raised a large family. I am especially interested in their
daughter Sarah O. Cavins, as she is my GG Grandmother. Sarah was born about
1827-28. She married my paternal GG Grandfather James Hart, ( who was born in
Ireland, date unkknown) approx 1845, in Greene Co. They migrated west to Ca.
approx 1855-56, and my Great Grandfather Elijah Carson Hart was born in what
was then Utah Territory, now the State of Nevada. He was born in or near
Genoa Nev. at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mts. near the end of this
arduous trek west. The family settled in Santa Clara co. at first,
eventually going on to the river town of Colusa, Colusa co., Ca. This family
was very prominent in law, the Ca. State Legislature, and Great Grandfather
Elijah, was appointed to the Superior Court here in Sacramento, eventually
elected to the 3rd District Court of Appeals, holding that office until his
death in Sacramento, Ca. in 1929. The family members I know the least about
are James and Sarah....any info would be much appreciated. Thanks....Judy in
Sacramento
