Hi all,
I introduced myself to the ingreene-l list earlier today. Below is info
concerning 'some' of my surnames, that I posted at the Greene Co. web page
query forum, with a few additions:
Joseph McDONALD moved his entire family (less one son, Clifton) to Greene
Co. IN from Brown Co. OH about 1836. His wife was Hannah (Carl) 'McDannel,'
buried in Olliphant Cemetery at Hobbieville 1842. Joseph died 1864,
apparently the first to be buried in McDonald-Lewis Cemetery. Children were
Mansfield m. YOUNG and PALTON?; Rebecca m. SPARKS; Permelia m. FLYNN; George
m. STORM; Phillip m. McGILL, ANDERSON and SHELTON; Sarah Ellen m. FLYNN ;
Ruie m. MELTON -- and Clifton B. MCDONALD, b. 1816 in Brown Co. OH. He
rejoined his parents and family in Greene County, IN, in 1853, after being
in the Ohio River Valley, then Louisville, KY and the goldfields of
California. He married Sarah Jane CLEMENTS in Louisville, KY 1846 who died
of cholera in CA. Clifton married Eliza(beth) Ellen RILEY 1853 in Greene
County, and Nancy HUDSON in 1878, after Eliza's death in 1876. Clifton
McDonald died 1895, he was living in the valley between McDonald-Lewis
Cemetery and Burch Cemetery at that time, all in Center Township.
Clifton's original home, in 1853, was a two-story log structure, located
about a football-field west of McDonald-Lewis Cemetery. A stone well still
existed nearby when I first visited the area about 1972 (I found a door
hinge.) Ed Burch told me at that time the house was used as a stable for
awhile before it was torn down several years before my visit.
I am descended from Carol 'Carl' MCDONALD, son of Clifton and Eliza above,
who married Nancy Ellen PAYNE, dau of William and Elizabeth (BRANDON) PAYNE.
The Brandon's and Payne's were neighbors of Clifton McDonald, living just
north and east of Clifton, after migrating there from NC about 1828. My
McDonald's moved 'out on the prairie' of Central Illinois in 1886. This was
likely a 'traumatic' time for them, after they and their ancestors had
always lived in 'hill-country.'
I will be happy to share info with others of these lines. In particular, I
would like to learn more about Eliza(beth) E. RILEY, who married Clifton
McDonald 11 Jun 1853. Eliza was reportedly born 17 Jun 1837 in the area of
Lexington, KY, possible dau of Isom and Adeline Riley. Eliza died 20 May
1876, buried in McDonald-Lewis Cemetery, with Clifton.
Does anyone have RILEY info???
Regards to all,
Neil McDonald
