From the l826 journal of Presbyterian missionary Isaac Reed (a famous
person in Christian missions history)... dated April l826 (I have shortened
this for this posting): Isaac was in residence near Gosport, Indiana at
the time.
***
April ll left with Mrs. Reed passed first night at Spencer. crossed White
River
next day by ferry, travel 30 miles all day, April l3 cross again by another
ferry,
3/4 mile...got breakfast at Mr.INGERSOL'S near the river, then crossed
prairie
to Mr. DAYHOFF'S. He was now my traveling companion (other facts re Mr.
D.),
Rode 8 miles that day. Preached at night at his house on SCAFFOLD PRAIRIE
(some data, no names on S. P.) April l6, Sabbath rode 7 miles and
preached 2 sermons at "FAIRPLAY" schoolhouse. Attendance and attention
pretty good. In this neighbourhood there are some of the advocates of
Robert Owen's new system of society..... (This is Robert Owen of the
Harmony
movement, also a famous cultural event in Hoosier history).
I published these items in entirety (not his complete journal, of
course) in the Spencer Evening World, Spencer Indiana April 12, 1977.
Microfilm available at Owen County Public Library genealogy division,
