THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, October 23, 1923,
Volume XLVII, Number 41, Page 7, Column 6, “DEATH’S HARVEST. LONG.” [Transcribed on March
25, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern
Greene County Public Library.]
Martha S. LONG was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, January 19, 1844; departed
this life at her home near Hobbieville, Indiana, August 18, 1923; aged seventy-nine years,
six months and twenty-nine days.
She was the daughter of Joseph H. and Mary HASKETT. She moved with her parents and
brothers and sisters to Indiana in April 1866, and settled in Jackson Township, near
Bethel Church.
She was married to Reuben A. LONG, a Civil War veteran, some time in February 1867. She
was the mother of nine children. The surviving children are: Mrs. Lizzie WAGGONER, of
Missouri; William LONG, of Hobbieville; John LONG, of ‘Aliceville; Mrs. Lettie BRANDON, of
Bedford, and Mrs. Stella NOEL, of Worthington. Those who have preceded her to the home
beyond are: Mrs. Jane HARPER, Mrs. Amanda DAVIS, Israel and Joseph L. LONG. Besides the
above name children, the deceased leaves thirty-eight grandchildren, a number of
great-grandchildren, one half-sister and four half-brothers, and a host of relatives and
friends to mourn her departure.
Her husband departed this life on February 3, 1885, leaving her to face the trials of this
life and rear her small children. Many were the trials and hardships she had to bear, but
she bore them all bravely. She was always ready to make any sacrifice that she could for
her children when they were in distress.
She united with the M. E. church at Old Clifty about forty years ago.
She was a good neighbor and a kind and loving mother.
Aunt Marth, as she was known by all her friends, seemed to be in good health for a woman
of her age, when she was stricken with stomach trouble, and gradually grew worse until the
angel of death came to her relief at 7: 30 p.m., August 18, 1923, and bore her sweet
spirit to the home beyond.
On Monday afternoon, August 20, 1923, her body was conveyed to the Flynn Cemetery, and
after funeral services, conducted by T. A. COX, was laid among its kindred dust, to wait
till Jesus “shall fashion anew the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the
body of His glory.”
