THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, August 23, 1923,Volume
XLVII, Number 41, Page 7, Column 6, “DEATH’S HARVEST—HARRAH.” [Transcribed on March 24,
2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern
Greene County Public Library.]
Mary Margaret HARRAH was born near Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana, March 14, 1865, and
departed this life at her home in Bloomfield, Indiana, August 17, 1923, at the age of
fifty-eight years, five months and three days.
She was one of nine children of Moses and Lucinda WILLIAMS, five of whom survive her,
namely: Mrs. Nancy WAMPLER and Mrs. Jane VICHE, of near Vincennes, and Mrs. Saul VANHOY
and John WILLIAMS, of Loogootee, and Henry WILLIAMS, of Lawrenceville, Illinois.
She remained at home with her parents, caring for them in their declining years, and
giving much of her time and service to the raring, teaching and training of a nephew,
Starlin ELLIS, who had been robbed of his mother by death when a mere boy, and who now
resides in the State of Washington.
After the death of her parents, she was united in marriage to Hiram HARRAH, November 4,
1905, a kind and loving husband who survives her.
She had no children of her own, but some time after her marriage to Mr. HARRAH, they
brought into their home his nephew, Herbert HARRAH, who they raised to manhood. By her
kindness to him, being ever ready to make him feel that their home was his home, she has
wound herself into his affections until to-day he feels like one who is giving up a good
and true friend—mother.
When learning of her serious and fatal illness, he with his good wife, came to her bedside
with willing hearts and hands and tenderly administered to her every want until the end
came.
She was converted to Christianity at a tender age and united with the Baptist Church.
After coming to Bloomfield, by letter she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian
Church, where she has remained a consistent and devout member.
She planned her funeral in every detail, selecting the way she wished to be dressed and
the songs to be sung. She said she was ready and willing to meet her God.
She was a kind neighbor and friend; a true wife, and the community mourn the loss of a
good woman. She had many good traits of character, unassuming and kind personality.
She lived knowing that any good we may do we should do now, for we pass this way but once.
Let us endeavor to emulate her life and thus make a better world.
The funeral services were held at the family home on Sunday afternoon August 19, and
interment was in the family plot at Grand View Cemetery.
—
We desire to sincerely thank our neighbors and friends for their many acts of kindness and
assistance to us during the last illness and after the death of our dear wife and mother.
Hiram HARRAH.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert HARRAH.
