Hi All,
I've had several requests recently for information about requesting birth
and death records in Greene Co., so I thought I'd post some info about this
on the list for everyone.
The Health Dept. now has a website up with information about costs for
certificates and photocopies (50 cents per page) of their records, what you
need to send with your requests and printable forms for making your requests
to them.
One note I would like to make about the death records is the date in which
these records begin. The form states the death records begin in 1893.
Actually, these records begin in 1882. The WPA indexed both the births and
deaths but, at the time the index was done for the deaths, the earliest
records were missed. Therefore, the WPA index only started with 1893. The
Health Dept. used the WPA indexes in their office for many, many years, so
when the request form was made it had the 1893 date on it. Several years
ago, the Health Dept. computerized their records and generated new indexes
for their births and deaths. The new index for deaths includes the earlier
records, which start in 1882.
The new indexes were put onto compact disc about a year or 2 ago, by Comarco
(a local company) in connection with the Bloomfield library, and were made
available for searching at the library in the Indiana Room.
The Health Dept.'s website can be visited at the following URL:
http://www.greenet.net/NonProfit/GCHealth/default.htm
This is the main page of the site. Click the link "Vital Records" for the
information about their records. Also, you'll find that the Dept. now has
specific hours for Genealogy when visiting the office in person. They did
this because of limited staff to handle both immunizations and genealogy at
the same time.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I've been bugging
them for many years with my searches, so I may be able to help with any
questions you might have.
Happy Hunting!
Diane :)
