THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, September 11,
1904,Volume XXVII, Number 12, Page 1, Column 3, “KILLED AT SAW MILL. Sad Death of James F.
Strawser at His Mill in Tennessee.” [Transcribed on December 19, 2005 by RLJ from
microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public
Library.]
The details of a deplorable accident have been received from Brownsville, Tennessee, near
which place James F. STRAUSER, a former Washington Township citizen, lost his life as the
result of the accident. While working in his saw mill, August 28,{sic?} about fifteen
miles west of Brownsville, he was standing near where a slab was being cut from a log; as
the slab was cut off in the center only one end was caught by the off-bearer while the
other end fell on the revolving saw, which threw it with tremendous force against a beam
and as it rebounded one end of the slab struck Mr. STRAUSER on the head and penetrated the
skull to such a depth that it required great effort to remove it.
The unfortunate man lived about eight hours, the accident happening at noon and death
resulting at 8 o’clock that evening, though he was unconscious all the while.
He was about 31 years of age and was a son of Mrs. Mary STRAUSER, of Newberry, and a
son-in-law of L. B. SHEPHERD of Fairplay Township, having married Arlie G. SHEPHERD
several years ago. He left a wife and three children, and the former is almost prostrated
with grief.
Mrs. Mary STRAUSER, L. B. SHEPHERD and daughter, Mrs. Flossie BORUFF and daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Retta SHEPHERD attended the funeral. Mrs. STRAUSER remained, but the others returned
last Friday.
The funeral services were held on Sunday following the accident, conducted by the Rev.
Thomas B. KING, and the remains were laid to rest in the Lebanon Cemetery, near
Brownsville.
In the story of the sad accident there is one fortunate, seemingly almost Providential,
fact: Mrs. STRAUSER had just taken out an accident policy for $2,000; the policy having
been delivered to him the morning of the accident, which amount together with a policy for
$1,000 which he carried in the Modern Woodmen of America, being a member of the Bloomfield
camp, will be paid to the widow.
