Volume LXXXIII, Number 2, Page 1, Column 7, “Local Woman, 76 Dies At Hospital—Mrs. Etna
Letsinger Rites To Be Saturday.” [Transcribed on December 14, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm
of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public
Library.]
Mrs. Etna LETSINGER, widow of the late Reed LETSINGER, passed away at 3:00 o’clock this
morning at the Bloomington Hospital. She had been taken to the hospital earlier this
week, suffering from pneumonia.
Born at Little Cincinnati in eastern Greene County on December 10, 1881, she was the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. PHILLIPS. Mrs. Letsinger was a graduate of Bloomfield
High School and of DePauw University and took post-graduate work at the University of
Illinois, where she also was assistant librarian for some time. She had taught school at
Bloomfield and Worthington and in some of the township schools in this county.
She was married to Mr. LETSINGER in 1912, and most of their married life was spent in
Bloomfield with the exception of six years when they resided in Bloomington while their
children were in college.
Mrs. LETSINGER was an ardent worker in the Methodist Church and was active in the Pringle
Class and WSCS groups of that church. She was also a member of the Wednesday Reading
Club, Wednesday Social Club, W. C. T. U., and the P. E. O. of Bloomington, and was a
former member of the Argonaut Club here.
Following Mr. LETSINGER’S death on October 29, 1956, Mrs. LETSINGER earlier this year
purchased home in Bloomington and moved her residence there. She was also preceded in
death by a son, John, a sister, and a brother.
Surviving her are two sons, Richard, of Bloomington, and Robert, of Wilmette, Illinois;
two daughters, Mrs. Catherine MELLETT, of Oxford, Ohio, and Mrs. Elizabeth ARENDSHORST, of
Holland, Michigan, and 13 grandchildren.
The body will lie in state at the Day Funeral Home in Bloomington until the hour of the
services. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the First
Methodist Church in Bloomington. Graveside rites will be held at Grandview Cemetery in
this community and burial will be there.
