Hello everybody,
A couple of the Squire boys married into my tribe, and are buried at
Marco. They are posted at
http://www.alkire.org/
There are three databases at Alkire Genealogy, the Squire boys are in
the Ohio file.
Dr. William Byrd Squire laid out the town of Jasonville. A classical
scholar, he named streets Horace, Virgil, and Livy. The folks living
there were not aquainted with these ancient authors, that is how
Jasonville got a Levy Street without even a river, much less a levy!!!
Dr. Squire's son, Byrd Squire, was a dry goods merchant at
Worthington. He, and my mother's grandfather, Dr. James Douglas
English, Dentist, became close friends. Dr. English's travel Journal
"To The West in 1895" was published by the Indiana Historical Society
about 25 years ago. He and Byrd traveled South as far as Mexico City,
West to Hawaii. During their trip, the first Railroad strike was going
on. The Royal family had just been ousted in Hawaii. In brief, it is a
very good read! I believe we counted 26 times Dr. English encountered
people that he knew, some by design, but many were just chance
encounters. I hasten to add, that I think there may well have been
other Byrd Squire s in Greene County.
