THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday, March 2, 1894,Volume
XXV, Number 51, Page 3, Column 5, “Obituary.” [Transcribed February 25, 2004 from
microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public
Library.]
Henry KESSLER was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, October 8, 1835. In his
sixteenth year he embraced faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and identified himself with the
Dutch Reform church. In 1854, Dec 2, he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza MELL, of
Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, with whom he has lived happily and fought successfully the
battles of life for nearly forty years.
In 1867 he emigrated with his family to Greene County, Indiana, and settled on a farm near
Bloomfield, and in 1890 he moved into the town.
About 6 years ago when the town of Bloomfield was incorporated he was elected a member of
the town board, which position he has faithfully and honorably filled until laid aside by
his last illness from all the duties and responsibilities of this life.
Soon after his removal to the State of Indiana, he with his companion united with the
Lutheran church. He was the father of 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. One son and two
daughters passed on before the father, and on the morning of February 21, 1894, at the age
of 58 years, 4 months and 13 days, after protracted illness, the Master said, “It is
enough, come up higher,” and Father KESSLER quietly fell asleep in Jesus, leaving a
companion, one daughter and two sons with other relatives and a large circle of friends to
mourn their loss, but they mourn not as those who have no hope.
Funeral services were held in the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. M. C. CLARK, pastor of
the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. M. D. WHITSETT. The remains were laid to rest in the
Bloomfield cemetery.
