APRIL 20, 1903
Sam H. Brinton, our former railroad agent here, was in town a few days last
week. Sam is a jolly fellow, and not at all cowardly, but he got badly
scared some time ago. Sam stopped at Flat Lick, the guest of Mat Smith,
merchant and undertaker. Now, Mr. Smith rooms over his store and keeps his
coffins in an adjoining room. After retiring Mr. Smith, who was tired, soon
fell asleep. Sam was laying his plans for sales, etc., when he saw a coffin
move; he gently shook Mat, who still slept; Sam kept his eye on the coffin,
which gave another move towards the bed; he again shook and called Mat, who
still snored; the coffin moved the third time, which was too much for Sam,
who jumped over behind Mat and yelled: "Mat! Mat! Wake up and explain this
thing!" Having met Mr. Smith at Lebanon, Dec. 26, 1902, I suspect he is
trying to play even, for some pranks played on him at that time.
EAST BERNSTADT
Anton Blunchi, with a crew of men is fixing up our roads, which have been in
terrible condition since the recent heavy rains.
Miss Sallie Pearl contemplates taking charge of the telephone exchange at
London for the new Telephone Co. There will be an exchange at this place,
and the line will be extended from here through Oakley and Mershon to McKee,
giving that part of the country advantages they never before had.
John Lawson who was killed by Chas. Durham Sunday evening at the Durham
place on the river, lay at the gate all night and up until the afternoon
Monday. His horse was also killed, and they lay out in all that hail and
rain storm, which was terrible. Lawson's brother was hunting for another
horse that was out and came across his dead brother lying in the road near
the gate. Lawson had gone to Durham's to get a pistol which Chas. Durham had
taken from Geo. Little previous to Little's death, when he was murdered.
There are several of the Lawsons and more trouble is likely to follow.
RACCOON
The infant child of Tolley Black is very sick.
George Evans, of this place left for Indiana last Saturday night. We all
regret to see him leave.
