Thank you, Steve Stalcup and Shauna, for your valued responses and input.
As to Phillip & Margaret (McGILL) McDonald in 1850 census, Joseph b. 1792
KY, who was living with them at the time was Phillip's father; his wife
Hannah (CARL) McD having died in 1842. (Joseph was living with his son,
Clifton & Eliza (RILEY) McD at 1860 census.) Phillip and Margaret's dau,
Hannah aged 5 in the 1850 census, was apparently named for Phillip's
deceased mother. My McD line was primarily located in southern Center and
northern Jackson Twp's.
There were two Joseph McDaniel-McDonald families in the Center-Jackson Twp
area of Greene Co. IN in the 1830-1840's era, one migrating from Brown Co.
OH (mine above) and another from North Carolina. The Joseph McD of NC is
shown on 480-287 of the 1850 census for Center Twp:
Joseph McDaniel, 54 m, farmer, 250 acres, b. NC
Lydia McDaniel, 55 f, SC
Children, all McDaniel:
Anderson, 27 m, laborer, SC
John, 24 m, laborer, SC
Daniel, 19 m, laborer, SC
Margaret, 17 f, NC
James, 15 m, laborer, NC
Polly, 13 f, NC
Clarissa, 11 f, NC
I do not know much about this Joseph McD family. Possibly Joseph & Lydia
married and lived in SC where their first few children were born, then moved
to NC where their younger children were born? Based on Clarissa's birth,
this Joseph McD migrated to Greene Co. IN after 1839. I list this as
possible help for those who may be researching McD families.
As to the James F. McDanold who was listed on 148-296 of the 1850 Greene Co.
census as aged 25, I have not researched him as he was not of my line.
However, he apparently was 'not' son of the Joseph & Lydia McD above since
James F. McD was aged 25 and born in Indiana per the 1850 census. The
*1840* Greene Co. IN census does list a George McDaniel who had a son aged
15-20, who would therefore be a candidate for the father of James F. McD.
However, there is no George McD listed in the 1850 census of Greene Co. IN.
But there is a Martha McDaniel listed (1850) for Jackson Twp, aged 57 f,
widow, b. VA, with Merrill, aged 17 m, laborer, b. IN, living with her.
Could Martha possibly have been widow of the George McD in 1840 census??
Thank you for your highly valued RILEY info. I, too, believe George W.
RILEY, the miller of Taylor Twp in 1850 census, is a good candidate for
father of my 'Eliza Ellen' (Riley) McDonald, w/o Clifton. However, I cannot
rationalize the rather scribbled spelling of 'Elazan' for my 'Eliza
Ellen,'
nor the fact that another apparent daughter is listed for George W. McD, as
Eliza aged 4. Census-takers of those times simply 'spelled'm the way they
thought they heard'm,' which may explain some errors that occurred from
time to time (Elazan = Eliza Ellen?? but what about the 'other Eliza' aged
4, I must wonder???)
Thank you as well, Steve, for your Isham Riley info, this fits sketchy
family-tradition' info about Eliza Ellen possibly being d/o Thomas 'Isom'
and Adeline _?_ Riley, previously of the Lexington, KY area. I need to
pursue research of both possibilities. Perhaps Mary, Eliza Ellen and Emily
(RILEY) were sisters??? (I didn't check ages, just a passing thought.)
Your Stalcup family name is quite familiar to me, being prominent around the
Center-Jackson Twp area of my ancestors. I shall enjoy exploring your web
pages more thoroughly.
Thanks again for your time and sharing,
Neil McDonald

Neil & Shauna:
I have links to both McDonald and Yockey families referenced in your recent
posts
regarding Elizabeth Ellen Riley and Emily Francis Riley. Rebecca
(Holmes) Wilson ,the widow of my Alexander Wilson, was living with second
husband, James F. McDonald (McDanold in 1850 Census) in HH# 240, Jackson
Twp. Phillip McDonald( Mc Danold) is HH# 250 in immediate vicinity and
Joseph Mac Donald (McDanold) (58-b.KY) is in this household. What is the
relationship of James F. Mc Donald to these other Mc Donalds ?
In checking my FTM CD#302 "1850 Census Microfilm-Indiana" , there is only
one probable for the Elizabeth Ellen Riley who married Clifton McDonald.
All the other Rileys listed in Greene County are Canal Laborers from Ireland
and most not married. In Taylor Twp., HH#792, there is a George W. Riley
(35-OH)-occupation Miller, with wife Margaret (33-OH). They have a 12
year
old female , born Ohio in their household named Elazan Riley. The age is
about right for being 16 at the time of marriage to Clifton B. McDonald in
1853.
Emily Frances Riley (b1830-KY) who married John M. Yockey in Boone Co.,KY
in 1847
was the mother of Mary Catherine Yockey who married my Jackson
Ashcraft in Greene County, Indiana. She may be linked to the following
Kentucky based Rileys in the 1860 Indiana Census for Greene County, Indiana:
Isham Riley (53-KY), HH# 0813, Center Twp.-- possible father ; with
wife
Adeline M. Riley (43-KY) ; nearby in HH# 815, Center Twp. William Riley
(23-KY); and in Jackson Twp. HH# 1690 Branson Riley (34-KY); in
Taylor
Twp. is George Riley (65-KY) HH# 1432.
In Jackson Twp. there is also HH#1483 headed by Elza Riley (53-PA) and wife
Ann
(44-OH). Next door in HH# 1484 is Nancy Riley (79-VA), probably
Elza's mother.
Unfortunately, there is no clear link for Emily to any one of these family
groups;
but at least this provides more grist for your mills.
