THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, November 28, 1940,
Volume LXV, Number 5, Page 4, Columns 1 & 2, "DEATH'S HARVEST-RUSH."
[Transcribed on November 26, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file
in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
George RUSH, one of fourteen children who came to bless the home of John C. and Mahala
(HOLMES) RUSH, was born February 17, 1855, on the RUSH homestead in eastern Greene County,
and departed this life October 27, 1940, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie
GILLILAND, and husband, at Solsberry, aged 85 years, eight months and 12 days.
His parents were sturdy, hardworking pioneers who came to Indiana from North Carolina
and Maryland. George, with the other brothers and sisters, shared in the hard work and
simple joys of the pioneer home and in the winter months attended the district school. He
was a lad when the Civil War broke out, and the departure of his older brother, Norman,
for the front left a profound impression on his mind and helped to inspire a lasting
admiration for the immortal LINCOLN, an interesting biography of whom he always enjoyed
reciting.
In his early teens he was converted in the M. E. church at Old Union. Later he became
identified with the M. E. church at Hobbieville in which he held membership the rest of
his life. He loved the services of the church-all of them-but especially did he enjoy its
music and was for some time chorister in the Old Union Church.
In 1883 he was married to Sarah COX, of Hobbieville. To this union five children were
born: Minnie GILLILAND, Oletis, who died in her second year; Theodore, Lula JOHNSON and
Bert, all living near here, and who were all with him at the time of death.
His faithful companion died February 29, 1932. Since then he has made his home with his
daughters and their husbands, Mrs. GILLILAND and Mrs. JOHNSON, who, with the husbands and
brothers, have done everything they could for his comfort and well-being. There has been
no sacrifice to great for these children and children-in-laws to make for Dad, and Mother,
too. Their devotion has been remarkable and untiring.
For the last five years, he had suffered from heart trouble, but not until last Thursday
was his condition alarming. On the Sunday before, he, Mr. and Mrs. JOHNSON and Theodore
had visited with a childhood friend, Mrs. Abbie HOLMES, and family and all had a wonderful
day, not realizing how near the call to come home was.
He had often expressed the wish that he might die singing. The wish was almost granted,
for when he was nearly too weak to be heard, they caught the words of one stanza and the
chorus of a favorite song, "I'm Going Home," and on Sunday morning about the
hour people were wending their way to God's house of worship, Death came so gently it
was like a peaceful sleep.
Survivors besides the children mentioned above are three sisters, Nancy PRICE, of Good
Night, Oklahoma; Emma GASTINEAU, of Ellington, Missouri, and Artie RUSH, on the old home
place, and six grandchildren, Mrs. Beatrice GARDNER, Harry JOHNSON and George, Theo,
Donald and Gene RUSH.
He was a man of firm convictions, honest in all his dealing, a lover of God's word,
good music, his family and friends.
