THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, May 15, 1941, Volume
LXV, Number 29, Page 4, Columns 3 & 4, "DEATH'S HARVEST-THOMPSON."
[Transcribed on November 27, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file
in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Robert P. THOMPSON, one of Greene County's old and highly respected citizens, was born
at Solsberry, Indiana, January 27, 1957, and died May 2, 1941, at the home of his son,
Ernest THOMPSON, in Indianapolis, where he has made his home for the past 15 years, at the
age of 84 years, three months and five days.
In early life he united with the Congregational Church at Solsberry and throughout his
long life his faith in that fellowship never wavered.
He attended school at Bloomington, Indiana, where he prepared himself for the teaching
profession which he followed for several years.
He was later elected to the office of township trustee of Beech Creek Township, where he
proved his ability to serve the public in any capacity to which he might be chosen.
He spent almost one-third of a century in and around the court house, for the most part
as deputy sheriff and deputy auditor in which positions he was unusually popular.
He was a Republican in politics and served his party in the capacity of county chairman
and also in other connections, yet he was never an offensive partisan and held the
confidence and respect of all parties.
Every position to which he was called was filled with credit to himself and with
complete satisfaction to his employers.
On January 3, 1879, he was united in marriage with Eliza Esther HANNUM to which union
seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy.
Those who survive in the order of their ages are Orland, of Topeka, Kansas; Irwin and
Ernest, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Paul NOLIN and Mary THOMPSON, of Bloomington.
He spent his life in service for the betterment of the community and to make a better
place in which to live, the greatest contribution he ever made was giving to the county
these many noble sons who have all been a success in life and the two worthy daughters who
also won the esteem and confidence of all their acquaintances.
He was a kind and affectionate father and never failed to express his love and devotion
to his children for their never ending care for him, which was so given by all of them,
especially by those in their homes.
