THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, March 2, 1916, Volume
XXXIX, Number 16, Page 8, Column 2, “OBITUARY. Vest.” [Transcribed on September 1, 2005 by
RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene
County Public Library.]
Polly Ann (ALLEN) VEST was born in Rush County, Indiana, January 9, 1829, and closed her
earthly pilgrimage at her home near Park, February 23, 1916, aged eighty-seven years, one
month and fourteen days.
She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew ALLEN. She had two full brothers, but they are
deceased. The following half-brothers, survive her: John R. ALLEN, of Bloomfield; George
ALLEN, of Oklahoma; Sherman ALLEN, of Linton; Albert ALLEN, Coalmont, Frank ALLEN, Koleen;
and Steven ALLEN, Oklahoma; also one sister, Mrs. Malinda MARTIN, survives her.
When nine years old she came with her parents to Greene County.
She was married to George W. VEST in {March 2,}1850. To this union were born eight
children. The living children are: Mrs. Eliza GRAFTON, of Bedford; Andrew J., Arcola,
Illinois, James M, Bloomfield, John E., Los Angeles, California, and Charles, of Park.
Besides a deceased infant, there are two other deceased children, viz: Oliver, who died in
1867, and Mrs. Elizabeth MOOD, who passed away in 1905. Her companion went before her in
1905. There are thirty-five surviving grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Early in life she became a member of the Christian church, and she endeavored to honor her
Master by clinging to Him and walking in His ways. Her long life was greatly appreciated
and respected by her many friends. Her industry, integrity, energy, kindly spirit and
neighborliness made her highly respected and loved. The infirmities of old age reminder
her of the approaching end, and the strength and help and hope derived from her long
fellowship with her God and Savior gave her comfort and courage as she advanced toward her
golden sunset, and without a doubt or fear she committed herself to the Great Shepherd of
her soul, and patiently awaited the call to be promoted to the great rest and joys
awaiting her beyond. Peacefully she closed her eyes upon all that is perishable and went
away to be with her God, beyond life’s tears and sorrows.
Her loved ones are consoled in the confidence and hope of her eternal safety and
happiness.
The funeral services were conducted from the Walnut Grove church, last Friday, February
25, at 11 a.m., by Elder J. A. SPENCER, and her body was laid to rest in the church
cemetery.
