THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, July 27, 1944,Volume
LXIX, Number 34, Page 1, Columns 7 & 8, “BYERS REPORTED KILLED IN FRANCE—PAUL BYERS IS
FIRST BLOOMFIELD BOY KILLED SINCE INVASION STARTED—21-Year-Old Son Of Mr. and Mrs. Dan
Byers Loses Life On June 17. ” [Transcribed on February 24, 2006 by RLJ from microfilm of
the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
The first war casualty of Bloomfield, since the invasion started was reported here Monday,
when the War Department by telegram informed Mr. and Mrs. Dan BYERS that their son, Pfc.
Paul R. BYERS, 21, was killed June 17 in France.
The telegram from the War Department follows:
“The Secretary of War desires to express his regret that your son, Pfc. Paul R. BYERS, was
killed in action on June 17 in France. Letter follows. ULIO, the Adjutant General.”
Mr. and Mrs. BYERS had not received word from their son for some time. He had been
stationed in England for the past eight months and his parents thought that he might have
entered France with the invasion troops. He was fighting with the U. S. Infantry. He
received his basic training in Mississippi.
BYERS attended the Bloomfield schools and was employed at Rainbow Store No. 4 and Nash
Hatchery before entering the service of his country.
He is survived by the parents and two brothers, Dallas BYERS, stationed with the U. S. M.
C. at Parris Island, S.C., and a younger brother, Frederick, at home.
