[Transcribed on February 22, 2006 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file
in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
James H. BARKER, one of the oldest residents in Greene County died at his home in Newberry
Sunday morning at three o’clock. He was past 93 years old, born in Scotland, Indiana,
January 29th, 1850 the son of Obediah and (Mary DAGLEY) BARKER, both deceased.
Mr. BARKER has lived in Greene County his entire life moving to Newberry about twenty-five
years ago. He was a member of the Shilo Baptist Church in Washington Township and the
Masonic order at Newberry. He was married to Dollie (RAGLE) BARKER who died about fifteen
years ago.
He is survived by two living children, Mrs. Mary TARNELL OF Washington, D. C. and Emma
BARKER at Newberry. One son Charley preceded him in death.
Masonic funeral services were held at the Newberry Lutheran Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with
interment in Newberry Cemetery. The Rev. G. C. LEONARD, of Vincennes officiated.

GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA, Taylor Township, Page 416, 2 Oct 1850, Line 1 & 416B, Lines 2
& 3, Dwelling 142, Family 863: BARKER, Ewel (24, m, Grocer, IN), Elizabeth (19, f,
TN), James (5/12, m, IN). {The 1850 Census is in conflict with the obituary as Ewel
BARKER’s wife was Elizabeth DAGLEY; I have not found an Obediah BARKER marrying a Mary
DAGLEY; None of the obituaries of any of the children of Obediah mention having a brother
James or Henry. I feel the obituary was in error because of the age of the deceased and it
is possible the writer of the obituary may have not known what the first names of the
mother and father were. The 1860 Census should list James with Ewel and Elizabeth, if not,
maybe he will be found with Obediah and Mary.}
