THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, October 2, 1947, Volume
LXXII, Number 48, Page 3, Column 5, “Prominent Resident of Scotland Dies Thursday.”
[Transcribed on February 27, 2006 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file
in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
William Wallace SUMMERVILLE, 97 years of age, possibly Greene County’s oldest resident,
died at 3 o’clock last Thursday morning at his home in Scotland. He had been ill for six
months.
Mr. SUMMERVILLE had spent all but 30 years of his life in the Scotland community, where he
was born on August 31, 1850. He was the son of John and Miranda (CROOKE) SUMMERVILLE,
pioneer Greene County residents.
He was a charter member of the Scotland I. O. O. F. lodge. He had been engaged in farming
until his retirement. For 30 years he had lived at Odon, but had returned to Scotland
upon the death of his wife, Mrs. Carolyn SUMMERVILLE, in 1943.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Nora MCELROY, of Scotland; three grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
The body was brought to the Jenkins and Son Funeral Home in Bloomfield where it lay in
state until 9 o’clock Saturday morning.
Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock at the United Presbyterian Church in Scotland,
with Rev. Lester C. TAYLOR officiating. Burial was in the Scotland Cemetery.
