THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, July 5, 1934,Volume
LVIII, Number 36, Page 7, Column 1, “DEATH’S HARVEST—MITCHELL.” [Transcribed February 28,
2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern
Greene County Public Library.]
Carrie H. (DUNCAN) MITCHELL, the last surviving child of James G. and Mary L. DUNCAN, was
born in Bloomfield, Indiana, December 8, 1859, and died June 20, 1934, at the family home
where her husband, D. H MITCHELL, brought her as a bride May 29, 1880, and where they have
lived these fifty-four years, toiling, rejoicing and sorrowing together in ideal
companionship, as they reared their family, and later as they descended the western slope
of life still together.
There were nine children born to this union; two died in infancy, two sons, Otto and
Ralph, died in childhood, and five daughters survive, Mrs. Cora SNEDEKER, of Indianapolis;
Mrs. Josie QUILLEN, Mrs. Veva FRY, and Mrs. Bonnie HUFFMAN, all of Bloomfield, and Mrs.
Ruth HUFFMAN, of Indianapolis. These daughters have, during the long illness of their
mother by their kind; untiring, watchful care partly repaid her for her love and devotion
to them. She and her good husband were never too busy to hear their first call for help
and these daughters have never forgotten. While the attention these girls have given
their mother is unusual, the constant loving care of the husband was still greater.
Mrs. MITCHELL’s parents, with their three girls and three boys moved from Bloomfield to
Harrodsburg while she was still small; later to Popcorn and then in young womanhood to
Koleen where Mr. MITCHELL saw her first as teacher in the Sunday school there. Their
friendship soon ripened into a love time has not dulled. She was a most unassuming woman,
but one could always be depended upon. She worked and served for love of work and
service, not for show or praise. In sickness among the family, neighbors or friends she
was there with helping hands and great love, for no one loved her neighbors and friends
more than she or showed that love in a sweeter way. Not only did she love her fellow men,
but her God. She was a charter member of the Walnut Grove Church of God when it was
organized at the school house, under the pastorate of Rev. E. M. LOVE. She and her
husband were long time active in the service until failing health overtook both. She was
presiding officer i!
n the Royal Neighbor lodge at Park for many years, and an interested and interesting
member of the Walnut Grove Mission Circle at the time of her death. She never cared much
for luxuries or showy things of life, but her interest centered in the simple, worthwhile
and enduring things, her presence has always been uplifting as one who walked and talked
with God.
Besides the surviving husband, sons-in-law, thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild,
and many relatives, neighbors and friends who sorrow today that she has gone from us.
Funeral services were held June 23, at 2:30 o’clock at Walnut Grove. Her five grandsons
and one nephew acted as pallbearers. Her work is over, she rests with God.
