THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, July 18, 1929,Volume
LIII, Number 37, Page 4, Column 3, “DEATH’S HARVEST—MITCHELL. ” [Transcribed February 28,
2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern
Greene County Public Library.]
John Wesley MITCHELL, son of John Wesley and Lucinda (FOGLEMAN) MITCHELL, was born March
18, 1858, near the present location of the Walnut Grove church, and in this community he
was reared, spent all his life, and died, devoted to his local community and the people
who compose it.
Death occurred at the family home on Sunday afternoon, June 30, 1929, at two o’clock, at
the age of seventy-one years, three months, and twelve days.
His father died in the service of his country during the Civil war and left the mother and
small children (two boys and two girls) to make their living in the struggles of life. Of
this family, one brother, David Henry MITCHELL, of Rockwood, is still living.
He was united in marriage to Nancy Elizabeth WADE on April 5, 1884. To this union was
born four children: Mrs. Nellie MATTHEWS, of Mineral; Mamie, who died when three years
old; Mrs. Fredith CLOGSTON, of Chicago, and Fred MITCHELL, of Bloomfield. He has six
grandchildren, four of whom are boys and two girls. These, with the widow and a host of
other relatives and friends, are left to mourn their loss in a true father, husband,
neighbor and friend.
Together with his beloved wife, he united with the Walnut Grove Church of God about
thirty-eight years ago under the pastorate of Rev. LOVE, who held a meeting in the Walnut
Grove school building. He remained a true Christian, strong in the faith of the church of
which he was a member, until his death.
He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Improved Order of Red Men,
and the Modern Woodmen of America, and endeavored to practice the principles and teachings
of these lodges both in his associations with his brother members and with the world at
large. He enjoyed the work of the lodge and was a regular attendant at the meetings.
Brother MITCHELL was a home-loving man, devoted to his family, which he ruled by fatherly
love and secured obedience and discipline without striking a blow.
His departure will cause sorrow and regret in the lives of the family, the orders of which
he was a member, and the entire community. But as we meditate upon his exodus we realize
that our loss is his gain and that all things work together for righteousness to those who
love God.
Funeral was held at Walnut Grove church, July 2, at 10 o’clock a.m. conducted by the Rev.
Paul HAYWOOD. Interment in the cemetery of Walnut Grove.

We desire to thank our friends and neighbors and especially the brethren of the Odd
Fellows and Red Men lodges, who watched so faithfully and untiringly beside the bedside of
our loved father and husband throughout his long illness and everyone who contributed in
any way to his comfort or our assistance.
MRS. LIZZIE MITCHELL,
MR. and MRS. BERTHAL MATTHEWS,
MR. and MRS. EMIL CLOGSTON
MR. and MRS. FRED MITCHELL.
