THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, December 31, 1925,
Volume L, Number 8, Page 4, Columns 2, “DEATH’S HARVEST. Winters.” [Transcribed on
November 30, 2005 by RLJ from the original newspaper on file in the Office of the Recorder
of Greene County, Court House, Bloomfield Indiana.]
Benjamin Franklin WINTERS, son of William Chester and Anna WINTERS, was born October 8,
1848 and departed this life at his home near Scotland, December 19, 1925.
He grew up from childhood under the Christian guidance and care of his parents in Owen
County, later moving to near Linton, Greene County.
He also had two brothers, Quincy Barton and Nathan Strange WINTERS, and one sister,
Christina, who died in young life a short time after marriage.
Throughout his life his respect for his parents, brothers and sister was very pronounced,
later placing the same respect upon his family. His respect for his mother was always
shown until her death at his home.
After reaching manhood, or to be exact, at the age of twenty-eight, he left his parents’
home and faced the world on his own initiative and responsibility.
He was first married to Caroline VANDUSER in Cairo, Illinois. To them were born two
children, one of whom died in infancy. The one living being Mrs. Anna SINCLAIR, residing
in Indianapolis.
He was again married. This time to May Florence FRY. To them has been born the following
children: Benjamin F., Susan, Charles, Oscar, Thomas and Henry.
Mr. WINTERS spent most of his life in Greene County, being engaged in farming and in the
grain and elevator business in Lyons.
Throughout his seventy-seven years of life in this world he made an acquaintance with his
fellow man that was extraordinary, he being regarded as a man whom one could trust. He
was honest, and was ever ready to help the poor, and thought this kind of character was
true religion, he having never taken interest in church affairs, which he many times in
his later years regretted, but in his last days he took another view of this life and the
life beyond and asked his friends to pray for him that he might be saved, and before he
died he deeply believed their prayers and his silent prayers were answered.
He leaves his family in sorrow, his brothers in grief, his friends in sympathy, and above
all, the respect of all who knew him.
He often said a father’s best contribution to his family that could be left behind was a
good name.
May he rest in peace, after suffering, and meet his Creator as he wished to meet Him in
heaven, with his suffering, agony and wounds healed for evermore.
