THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, July 2, 1925, Volume
XLIX, Number 34, Page 7, Columns 2 & 3, “DEATH’S HARVEST.” [Transcribed 28 Dec 2001
from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.]
Saturday’s BEDFORD MAIL carried the following regarding the funeral of Mrs. Sherman
HOLMES:
The funeral services, sacred to the memory of Mrs. Sherman HOLMES, who passed away
Wednesday at the Dunn Memorial Hospital, were held Friday afternoon at two o’clock at the
Lowder Cemetery near Popcorn and it is said to have been the largest funeral ever held
there, relatives and friends from the whole countryside having taken this opportunity of
paying their last sad tribute of respect to the deceased.
Rev. Logan HATFIELD of Owensburg, cousin of the deceased, conducted the services and his
words were tender in eulogizing the woman who stood so high in her community and his words
of comfort were of much solace to the husband and her nine children. Many beautiful
floral offerings testified to the affection of friends as well as sympathy for the family
in this their darkest hour of sorrow. A quintet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Rolla HOLMES,
Joe PARKER, Mr. and Mrs. Everett WILSON, sang “Angel Band,” and another favorite hymn of
the deceased.
All of the children were present—Fred HOLMES, wife and children; Mr. and Mrs. FLAGERTY, of
Hammond; Mr. and Mrs. Laurel HOUPT and Mrs. SMILEY, of Avoca; Harvey HOLMES, Mrs. Florence
MITCHELL, of Avoca; Mrs. Cecil SMILEY, of Bloomfield, and Max and Marie HOLMES.
There were relatives and friends from Bloomington, Bloomfield and Jasonville among whom
where Mr. and Mrs. George MITCHELL, Mr. and Mrs. Marion BUSENBURG, Mrs. Mary LOWDER, of
Jasonville; Mr. and Mrs. Homer LOWDER, Mrs. Boone RAINBOLT; Mrs. James COX, of Bloomfield;
James GILLILAND, of Carlisle; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil SMILEY and family and Ot HOLMES and
family, of Bloomfield.
