THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, June 1, 1916,Volume
XXXIX, Number 29, Page 4, Columns 4 & 5, “OBITUARY. Stafford.” [Transcribed September
28, 2003 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene
County Public Library.]
Joseph B. STAFFORD was born February 29, 1856. His parents, Presley and Sallie STAFFORD,
were among the pioneer settlers in this country. His father came from England, first
settling in Kentucky; later moving to what is now Stafford Township, Greene County, where
Henry, John F. and Joseph B. were born.
He was married October 10, 1878 to Mary M. SMITH, to which union were born four
children—three daughters and one son—Pearl, Nellie, Hazel and Hubert.
They lived on the STAFFORD homestead for twenty-one years, moving from there to
Edwardsport. But for the last ten years he has resided with his family in Terre Haute,
and California.
He departed this life May 18, 1916, leaving a wife and one daughter, Mrs. W. D. FISHER, of
Flat River, Missouri; one son, Hubert E. STAFFORD, of Terre Haute, and one brother, John
F. STAFFORD, of Lyons.
The funeral was held at the residence at 405 N. Sixth Street, Terre Haute, Sunday, May 21,
conducted by Rev. EDMONDS, a life-long friend of the family. Burial at Highland Lawn
Cemetery.
The subject of this sketch united with the church when he was a young man; and a liberal
supporter of the gospel and true to the church. Now the time has come when we must say
goodbye with the hope of meeting again where death and the separation of friends are
unknown. We pray for the consolation of Christ to be freely given to this bereaved
family, especially the wife of the deceased, and may we, his friends and neighbors, not
lose sight of the fact of our own mortality and may we live to be able to meet death
gladly. A FRIEND.
