THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, December 4, 1941,
Volume LXVI, Number 6, Page 1, Column 3, "Pioneer Resident of Bloomfield
Succumbs." [Transcribed on December 22, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original
newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Funeral services for Mrs. Emma WEATHERWAX, 91 years old, one of Greene County's oldest
residents, who died at 11:00 o'clock Saturday night in her home in Bloomfield.
Services were held Monday afternoon in the Bloomfield Methodist Church, with burial in the
Grandview Cemetery. She was a member of this church.
Mrs. WEATHERWAX was born on April 4, 1850, in Bloomfield, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Willis D. LESTER. She had taken pride in the fact that she had never lived out of sight
of the Greene County Court House. She had been ill but a short time before her death.
Her father, Willis LESTER, was a pioneer resident of Greene County, who came to Bloomfield
from South Carolina. He remained in Bloomfield for many years and was a proprietor of a
Bloomfield general store.
He served as judge of the Greene County Court for 17 years and at one time was postmaster
of Bloomfield.
Mrs. WEATHERWAX was the last surviving member of her family. Her husband, George
WEATHERWAX, passed away a number of years ago.
It is recalled by a Bloomfield resident that Mrs. WEATHERWAX'S oldest brother, Peter
LESTER, died 72 years ago.
Only surviving relatives are two nephews, Dr. Harry R. ISENHOWER and John W. CUSHMAN, both
of Bloomfield, and three nieces, Mrs. A. B. TITUS, and Mrs. Emma C. BYNUM, of Bloomfield,
and Mrs. Ella WEBSTER, of Lyons.
The Kidd Undertaking Company was in charge of arrangements.
