Ths Only Arthur Cemetary I have found is the one in Solsberry, that of
course is Greene County, but not frequently mentioned. I believe Martha (
Arthur) Burks Floyd's 1st wife ) is buried there. She passed in 1936.

Karen,
I have info on some of the Burks you are talking about, my Grandmother
Stella Ethel BURKS m. Virgil F. NOEL is from this line , as Edmon/Edmund
BURKS
was her grandfather.
I have some info on Edmund and his second marriage, it was to Hannah
Johnson, as she had been married before she married to Edmund:
JOHNSON, Hannah to WILBER, Joseph.....20 Feb 1851.....BkE, pg 242
.......Greene Co.IN. #1
BURKS, Edmon to WILBEIR, Hannah.........17 Apr 1870......BkH, pg
430........Greene Co.IN. #2
I also have the Mary that Edmund married was a Mary A. Minks [a widow}
but I'm not sure about her being a BURKS originally?? I didn't have
much
info on William BURKS, only that he had married a Mary C. Lewis, but when
I
check the census records for a William BURKS......the wife listed was a
Sarah,
but I find no daughter named Mary for them?? I'm interested in what
else you
might have on them as well.
I don't have information on where Edmund or Sarah or his other wives
are
buried. Possibly someone on the list might be able to look that up:
Edmund/Edmond Burks d. 4 Mar 1890
Sarah Gwin Burks d. 25 Aug 1869
Hannah Johnson Burks d. ?
Mary Burks d. ?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
N.J.
..........................................original
message.......................
I am researching the parents of Matilda Catherine Burks b. 1841 that
married
James H. Dyer.
I find that her parents were Edmond/Edmund Burks b. abt 1818 in Mercer
Co.,
KY and Sarah Gwin.
Sarah died in1869 and Edmond remarried Hannah Wilbier. They divorced.
>From the 1880 census it appears that he married Mary Burks - his
>brother's
daughter. They are living with William Burks and he is shown as
father-in-law.
Mary had previously been married to a Minks and had a daughter Jane age
11.
So, it seems his brother brother was also his father-in-law!!!
Is anyone familiar with this family?
I would like to try to obtain a photo of Edmond and Sarah's gravemarkers
if
I can find where they are.
Hope to hear from someone!

Ah ha! I know now why William is shown as father in law with Edmond
Burks
and his wife Mary and stepdaughter Jane Minks.
The census taker put the household number on the wrong name. It should
have
been on Edmond, not William. William is the father-in-law of Joseph
Cooper
. . . the family right above Edmond.
Glad that puzzle is solved.
Thanks to everyone who responded!

John Gardner is listed in the Goodspeed Bros. "History Of Greene &
Sullivan Counties..." as being one of the first Justices of the Peace in
the township. He was also noted as having entered a land patent in 1820.
"JONEBBOROUGH.
It is said that McGill & McGill were the first men to open a store at,
Jonesboro, but Ephraim Jackson and Charles D. Rader conducted stores in
this portion of the county, beginning a few years before. The McGills
began the business about the year 1839. Late in the same year, William
Dorch opened a grocery there, wet and dry. About this time, John Gardner
was fined before a Justice of the Peace for retailing liquor without a
license. This was not at Jonesborough, however." (pp 323)
