Message Board Post:
John Gardner is listed in the Goodspeed Bros. "History Of Greene & Sullivan
Counties..." as being one of the first Justices of the Peace in the township. He was
also noted as having entered a land patent in 1820.
"JONEBBOROUGH.
It is said that McGill & McGill were the first men to open a store at, Jonesboro, but
Ephraim Jackson and Charles D. Rader conducted stores in this portion of the county,
beginning a few years before. The McGills began the business about the year 1839. Late in
the same year, William Dorch opened a grocery there, wet and dry. About this time, John
Gardner was fined before a Justice of the Peace for retailing liquor without a license.
This was not at Jonesborough, however." (pp 323)
