Hi List
I am searching for information on a Jonathan B. Osborn born in Greene County , Eel River,
Twp., Indiana.
This is the information I now have; In 1996 I found my grandfather William (Franklin
Osborn) and my great
grandfather (Jonathan B. Osborn) in Eel River, Greene County Indiana. This is my correct
family line.
Jonathan B. Osborn is listed on 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census with this wife Malinda
Jessup.
They had two sons and three daughters that remained in the household up to 1880. Oldest
son
John Lafe Osborn, b. 1853 married Hattie C. Maxwell also of Greene Co. IN. John and Hattie
died in Jerrerson
Twp, buried in Worthington Cemetery, Greene Co. IN> William Franklin Osborn, born 8
Oct. 1857, Eel Rive, Greene
Co. IN. married Lela Scott, daughter of Jerome Bonaparte and Mary Isabell (Minich) Scott
of Freedom, Owen Co. IN.
William Franklin and Lela (Scott) Osborn are buried in Omaha Cemetery, Omaha, Texas. The
three girls I do not
have any information on them.
Since I started my search on this family I have found bits and pieces of information on a
Jonathan Osburn/Osborn
that on the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census of Greene Co. IN as head of household. The number
and age group of the
children in the household is not consistent and the difference of age of Jonathan and his
wife is about 10 years which
is not a uncommon practice.
History of Greene County Indiana by Uncle Jack Baber makes reference to Jonathan Osborn
purchased land in 1817
in Greene River. IN 1819 a Jonathan Osborn operated a ferry above Point Commerce which
is near Eel River.
In 1821 a Jonathan Osborn was a member of a jury for Greene Co., IN . In 1824 Jonathan
Osborn was known as a
excellent powder maker from the usual materials-alkali, charecoal, sulphur and saltpeter.
A Jonathan Osborn is friends
of Caleb Jessup, Ira Danley, Amos Owen and Orren Talley all early settlers of Greene Co.
Clabe Jessup was a Quacker
and was married three times and fathered 18 children, his third wife was Margaret Huey,
the mother of Malinda (Jessup)
Osborn, wife of Jonathan B. Osborn. I have not been able to make positive connection ,
but I feel this Jonathan Osborn
early settler of Greene Co., IN. is the father of Jonathan B. Osborn.
I have a copy of a will made by a Jonathan Osborn in August 1842. In this will he does
not give his wife first name only
refers to her as wife, and leaves her the absolute property except, one dollar to his
daughter Jane, Catharine, Patience
and Rachel. One dollar each to his sons Joseph and Jonathan. This will is ordained by his
esteemed friend Joseph S.
Osborn , and Ira Danley exector as this last will and testament, witnessed by Joseph S.
Osborn, Ira Danley, James Sparks,
and James C Plume. The Joseph S. Osborn that is referred to as his esteemed friend is
perhaps a brother or uncle
not his son. This will was probated September 1842 so I am assuming Jonathan died
following month of this will.
I have also found land records of Greene Co. IN as follows:
24 Oct. 1834 Jonathan and his wife Patience Osborn transfered land to Joseph S. Osborn
19 July 1842, Jonathan SR. and Patience Osborn transfered land to Jonathan Osborn JR. for
love.
The above information is all I have. I have not found when and where Jonathan B. Osborn
died, however I have
information that his wife Malinda died 1886 and is buried next to her father Caleb Jessup
in Griffith Cemetery,
Greene Co. Indiana.
In 1850 cnsus of Greene Co., IN., Patience Osborn, widow of Jonathan Osborn is living in
the home of Joseph S.
and Nancy Osborn, she was 63 years old. In 1860 census of Greene Co. IN Patience Osborn
is living along at the age
of 73. Joseph S. Osborn is now married to Elizabeth assuming Nancy Osborn had died. In
1870 census Pateince and
Joseph are not listed in Greene Co. IN. I have not found where they moved to or if they
had died and where they are buried.
Census records indiated Patience was born in North Carolina and that she was born abt.
1788 . Jonathan Osborn Sr.
was born abt. 1778.
I would appreciate any information on this family line. Jonathan B. Osborn and Jonathan
and Patience Osborn has been
a brick wall for such a long time I need some help to connect this family line.
