I found the following information in a Worthington, IN newspaper regarding a divorce between Wilborn and Cathany Stamper in Greene County, IN in 1859.
Other Greene County Stampers of this time include:
Solomon and Margaret (Arthur) Stamper and family
Jonathan and Cynthia Stamper and family
John and Frankey (Stamper) Cox and family
Who is this Wilborn and how is he related?
State of Indiana, Greene County.
Greene Circuit Court, April Term, 1859.
Wilborn Stamper,
Vs. Cathany Stamper
Complaint for Divorce.
Comes now the plaintiff, by Cavins & Cavins, her (sic) attorneys, and files his complaint herein, and also the affidavit of a disinterested and competent witness, that the said Cathany Stamper is a nonresident of the State of Indiana; said defendant will therefore take notice that unless she shall appear before the Judge of said Court, on the second day of the next term thereof, to be held at the Court House in Bloomfield, on the third Monday in April, 1859, then and there before the calling of said cause for trial, to plead, answer, or demur to said complaint, the matters therein contained will be heard in her absence and determined accordingly.
Attest,
John M. Humphreys, C'lk.
March 3,1859. 1-3w

Thanks for that! Very helpful. My grandmother was Rosemary Strickland, Emery's daughter, William Newton's granddaughter. So I guess that would make William Newton my great great grandfather.

I live in Greene county and have researched the history of it quite a bit. Many early settlers in the southern tip of the state of Indiana were squatters and three sections had been named. You can check the government land office records "glorecords" for your ancestor's name and probably the name and date will be listed, plus the amount of acreage. I think arguing about the legal establishment of Greene county is not important. Calvertville was established early because it was near White River and people could ship their produce down river. I am not familiar with the name Burham, however. Go to www.rootsweb.com and click on " world connect" to find the name perhaps. Good luck.

Are you sure about those dates?
Very little of Indiana was settled by whites prior to 1800, and Greene cont wasn't established until 1821, only after treaties were signed with the local Indian tribes to allow whites to settle in the area.

Duane, Can you tell me about the John Crane (1710-1750) and wife Elizabeth whom you mentioned lived in Greene County, IN at one time. I am related to the Cranes from Calvert County, MD but don't recall having a John and Elizabeth in IN. I could provide you a lot of info on many Cranes from Calvert who moved to Greene and Monroe County Indiana around 1820 when there was a large migration of Maryland residents. There was a John and Elizabeth in Calvert who was probably a grandfather or great grandfather of the original Indiana Cranes.
