Hello
I have questions about the following Greene County ladies and whom they married and hope that someone can tell me more about them and their families.
According to the marriage records online from the Bloomfield (Indiana) Public Library at www.bloolmfield.lib.in.us , Mariam/Marion/Mary Ann FLYNN/FLINN married John SPINKS on 3 Sep 1857 (Book F, p. 517) in Greene County, Indiana. I think he died during service in the Civil War and she then married Thomas MURPHY on 11 Jul 1876 (Book K, p. 83). I have found no references to her after that. I believe she had three children from her first marriage: John S. SPINKS, Sam SPINKS, and Mollie SPINKS. Does anyone know Mariam's parents, date of death, burial place, other children, etc.?
Mollie married William Preston LEWIS in August but the rest of the date is difficult to read. The marriage is recorded in Book M, p. 176.
The same records show Margaret J. BURCH marrying John S. SPINKS on 11 Jul 1887 (Book M, p. 230). Who are their children? What are the dates of their deaths and where are they buried?
Elizabeth HATFIELD, according to the above source, married a Jonathan SPINKS on 1 Dec 1874 (Book J, p. 423). My guess is that he is a son of David SPINKS. Can anyone verify that? Also, I'm guessing that he died at a young age and Elizabeth then married John F. LONG on 27 Oct 1876 (Book K, p. 115). Also, I think her cousin?/brother? Ralph HATFIELD married a Sarah SPINKS (10 Oct 1876, Book K, p. 106). Is Sarah a daughter of David SPINKS and therefore a sister of Jonathan?
Are David SPINKS and John SPINKS (the one who was married to Mariam FLYNN and the father of John S., Sam, and Mollie) brothers? Who were their parents?
I might add that figuring out the dates was a little difficult and I may have misread some but maybe there is enough information to help pinpoint these individuals. Many thanks in advance if anyone can add information--or correct what I have deduced!
Sincerely,
Sharon

FYI, Richard and Rebecca Puckett had other children in addition to Mary Ann. They were Nancy J., Elizabeth, and Sarah (she married Daniel Kent). Elizabeth and Nancy died at birth or very young.
You are right about Franklin Thomas Carmichael. He was my gg grandfather, and he married Mary Ann Puckett.
I believe that Abner Burch married Stacy Ann Carmichael, dau. of Archabold Carmichael and Martha Pennington. Archabald was Franklin T. Carmichael's grandfather.
Mahala Burch married Augustine Carmichael and had children Mary E, Achilles, John D., Martha M., James A., and Henry Joseph. Augustine was son of Archabald Carmichael and Martha Pennington and brother to Stacy Ann Carmichael who married Abner Burch.
I just checked my files, and here is another interesting aside. Richard and Rebecca Puckett both died in 1837-38 and the children (Sarah and Mary Ann) were placed with Burch families--Sarah with George Burch, Sr. and his wife Martha and Mary Ann with Davis and Lechy Burch (until she was 15 or 16 at which time she went to live with the James King family.
Are George and Davis Burch in your tree? I hope you find this helpful and that I have just not muddied the waters for you!

Hello, listers
Does anyone know where the naturalization records for the 1870s would be found?
I have contacted the Bloomfield Public Library and the Circuit Court in Bloomfield but the kind and helpful people who responded did not have these records.
I'm interested to finding the naturalization records of William O. BAIRD, an English-born resident of Greene County from the early 1870s until his death in 1918. I have found him in the 1871 British Census in Newcastle, Northumberland, England and then next he is married to Margaret KING in the southwestern part of Indiana in early 1872, possibly in February and possibly in Greene, Vigo, or Clay Counties. He does not appear to have wandered around much! Would he have filed his papers in Bloomfield and then those papers moved at a later date to another location?
I have no idea where he entered the U.S. or from what port he left England, or even why he came directly to Greene County from England, which must have been the case. Because of the year he came to the States, he isn't among the Ellis Island immigrants and I can't find him in the Castle Garden records.
Perhaps his naturalization records will add some information about the life of William O. BAIRD.
Many thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
Sharon

Horrid Calamity
Fearful Boiler Explosion
12 Persons Killed Outright
Several Severly Wounded
Greene County Draped in Mourning
The most shocking accident that ever
occurred within the borders of Greene
County, happened on Friday last (March 16,)
at what is known as the Hunter Mill.
The boiler was formerly owned by Dixon &
Dorrough to operate a sawmill. It after-
wards was named Hunter Bros. in
operating a saw and gristmill combined.
Friday, being their usual grinding day,
the people of the neighborhood gathered in-
some for the purpose of getting their
grinding done, and others for the purpose of
loafing-until the number reached about two
dozen. As the storm of that day approached,
they very naturally gathered in the mill for
shelter and naturally enough gathered
around the boiler. While they were gathered
there, a terrible explosion of the boiler
scattered their mangled forms in every
direction, killing twelve outright and
wounding several others.
The cause of the accident, so far as
can be learned, was that the engineer
allowed the water to get low in the boiler,
and his effort to fill it with cold water
caused an explosion.
The names of those killed outright are as follows:
John Spelts, Irwin Rea, James Hunter,
John Hunter, Orin Sarver, John Wilkie, A.
Vandeventer, one son of J. Brubaker, and two
sons of D. Hunter and John Hamilton, Jr.
Absolum Vandeventer was cut entirely
in two at the waist. The upper portion of
the body was thrown about twenty feet.
John Wilkie, at the time of the
exploxion, was seeing after his grist, and
when found was lying upon his back with the
mill-stone upon his chest and head.
Orin Sarver had the top of his head
blown entirely off.
James S. Hunter's head was blown off,
and his bowels torn out.
Irwin Rea had his legs broken, and
received internal injuries.
John Spelts, scalded and back of head
torn away.
John Hamilton, had his leg torn off and
his body badly mangled.
Three boys were among the victims.
Two of them were killed outright, and the
third one afterwards died of his injuries.
Of the wounded were Allen Brubaker,
John Bender, William Bland, Henry Bland,
Alfred Hunter, Walter Hunter, and Ahart
Hash.
The above is an instance of what may
be termed reckless carelessness, however
sad it may be to the community which looses
the victims. Parties who visited the scene
report that the boiler shows the water to
have been very low at the time of the
explosion. It has also been a well known
fact that the boiler had been regared as
unsafe for a long time. Experience
sometimes teaches dear lessons, and this
terrible visitation teaches one which should
be heeded by those who operate machinery
by steam power. First, procure nothing but
first class machinery, and have the boiler
constantly in best repair. Second, employ
none but first class and competent
engineers. Deep sympathy, mingled with
indignation, is the expression of every one
who mentions this sad calamity.

The 2000 plat book for Greene County indicates that the land, in
2000, was owned by Henry Rooksberry.
Concerning the Stamm family. To the best of my knowledge Dick
Stamm, or a tenant farmer, is farming on the west side of County Road 1100 West
between County Roads 200 South and 300 South, about 3/4 of a mile west of
Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. The lands include lands formerly owned by
Wilson and Maggie Trueblood, Curt & Loyce Gilligan (Pleasant View Farm), John &
Emma Peters and perhaps others.
