one recent account -
He was killed along with several others in the shingle Mill explosion the following account has been given: By 1876, the heavily timbered land of Beech Creek and Highland Townships was being "opened up". The lack of good roads, bridges, and needs for timber had saved it from the saw mill's that were making inroads around Calvertville and Newark. Logs felled during the winter freeze and pulled by horse and chain were stacked at random around the clearing where the Hunter Brother's shingle mill was operating. The March thaw had not yet set in and the water in the small creek at the mill site was still ice cold. The boiler of the steam saw mill had run dry and was red-hot when the cold water was poured into it. Almost instantly the boiler burst with a report that was heard miles away. The site was littered with the dead and destruction of the property. Nineteen men and boys were at the mill at the time of the expolsion, and of these twelve were killed outright, one was !
mortallu wounded and six were more or less seriously injured. Killed were James Hunter, John Hunter, John Spelts, ABSALOM VANDEVENTER, John Wilkie, two little sons of David Hunter, a son of John Hamilton, son of John Rea, son of Henry Sarver, son of George Bender and a son of Jacob Brubaker. James Hunter had a son present who received inruies that resulted in his death shortly after the explosion. Those near the site of the esplosion hurried into the clearing but were almost too shocked to be of service. But the word was soon spread that there was a holocaust at the mill. Mothers, wives, daughters, and sons had to go through two terrible ordeals - sorrowing for their loved ones lost in the accident and looking into the faces of men who were busy at work in search of remains of the dead. Strong men, with tears streaking their pale faces worked feverously to do what could or had to be done. But now, one hundred years later, the site of the explosion is commemorated on !
the official Greene County highway map.
The 1884 history pg. 303
AN APPALLING ACCIDENT.
In March, 1876, an appalling accident occurred on Section 21, which, from its number of deaths, is unparalleled in the history of Greene County. This was the explosion of the boiler of the steam saw mill owned by Hunter Brothers.
The boiler had run dry and was red hot when cold water was pumped into it. No sooner had this occurred, than with a report that was heard miles away, the boiler burst, causing death and destruction on every hand. Nineteen persons were present at the time of the explosion, and of these twelve were killed outright, one was mortally wounded, and six were more or less seriously injured.
The following is a list of the killed: James Hunter, John Hunter, John Spelts, Absalom Vandeventer, John Wilkie, two little sons of David Hunter, a son of John Hamilton, son of George Rea, son of Henry Sarver, son of George Bender and a son of Jacob Brubaker. James Hunter, the first named, had a son present who received injuries that resulted in his death shortly thereafter.
It was not long until hundreds of people were on the scene, drawn thither by the report that the boiler of Hunter's saw mill had burst. Mothers, daughters and sisters were there, bewailing the loss of loved ones with tears and lamentations, while the horrified glances and pale faces of men who were busily at work in search of the remains of the dead added to the sorrow of the scene.
May Highland Township never be visited with another such disaster, but, on the contrary, may it thrive and nourish, its citizens prosper, its abundant resources be developed, and then Highland Township will be second to none in Greene County.

Lavinia Conway was a sister to my 3rd gr. grandfather James Conway. Their father was a William H. Conway and he was born ca 1760, died before 1840, lived in SC as a child, not sure where he was born, fought the Indians in the Rev. took no pension for his war effort. He thought it more important to get the land away from the red men. He is buried at Ooley's Mlll in Beech Creek Twp., of Greene Co. in his army blanket according to legend. I have never found a wife but have quite a bit on his kids and most descendants. I am not seeing the marriage for William Russell and Martha Jane Walls, and I don't see her name in my database, but thought I had seen her before in Highland Twp. Anyway there is a stone in the Grandview Cem. in Bloomfield with W. H. Conway, Rev. War soldier, but no dates or any other information. Seems like there might be a stone in Linton Cem with the surname Conway on it, but no other information. Your Russell line intertwines with the Livingston line !
as does the Conways. I will check Martha Jane Walls and William Russell again.

My cemetery listing has Absolum Vandeventer death date as 1876, I can not remember if he has a stone or not, and I had planned a trip this spring when some cousins come out from CA and AZ, if the water isn't up. I may have got the original date from one of his grandkids, so I will have to do some more rechecking. Also will see about the newspaper article, too.

If you read closely you will see the reason for the rife - between the 2 families of James Thomas - the boys did not approve of their fathers ways - Mandy - told me of the story she heard probably from her father - who he and Uncle Ab marched the "erring couple" to the courthouse when the 4th child was on the way - and why Grandmother Lillie was in Ab's household -
These families are all verified by census records - and Mandy supplied infomation over the phone to me back in the late 1970's

Yes - Abner was son of James Thomas "Tom" and Polly Ann (Long) Vandeventer - Darrell and July Ann (Turley) Long
Abner moved to Lyons and had daughter Mae - grandmother went to live with them sometime after her mother's death-
James and Polly had Nancy, Abner, Winfield, Lillie and Kate (who was described as "idiotic"); James Thomas "Tom" and Alice (Barker) had 11-12 children
Only have father of Mary Ellen Elizabeth Huffman - is to be David - I have not verified this - in the same pension papers she mentions they were married in Gibson county indiana - have not found a record there of the marriage -
James Thomas was to be born there too so assume that is where Absolum's first wife Susannah/Susan Coghill died - they came from the Shelby Ky. area since 2nd marriage was shortly afte James Thomas - we assume she died during child birth - for shortly thereafter, possibly of complications - but only conjucture since no information is known - from Gibson they first settled for a brief time in Clay county -
I have been doign a manuscript on the Vandeventers of Clay, Greene, Morgan, Monroe and Owen counties Indiana -
Yes I am very sure some of the men where Civil War veterans- you could check on the InGenWeb Site for Greene county as to verify - there is a listing of Veterans of the CIvil war with b. & d. dates known and burial locations.

Thank you for the reply, and the spelling correction of Absolum's name. What a terrible account of that day, and how your great-great grandfather died.
I enjoyed reading the Civil War Pension file record that you posted. Our family history story has been that some of the men were Civil War veterans.
Do you have an Abner Vandeventer that was born abt.1867, and married Mary F. Pickard in your records?
Also, do you know who Mary Ellen Elizabeth Huffman's parents were?
Thanks again.

Hi, I've checked the sites you've listed but cannot seem to get into them without offering up my firstborn. Could you please see if you have a Harley Nickless in your database? Harley died a week after marrying my grandmother in a mine accident. The date I have is Jan 8, 1905.
Thanks

My ancestors that worked in the various mines are:
Robert Gallion (grandpa), Ray Gallion (father), Hiram Gallion (uncle), Max Gallion (cousin), Newton (Newtie) Kessinger (grgrandfather), Robert and Ronald Fry (uncles). My Gallions came from Carter/Boyd Counties Ky and my Kessingers came from Perry County, Ohio all about 1909-1910. Dad said he started in the mine when he was 13. He retired in 1967 after he broke his leg in a mine accident. He was still working underground at that time and the little train car hit something causing the accident. He was able to walk without a cane afterwards. He died in 1971.
GrGrandpa died in 1960. Grandpa Gallion died in 1948; Uncle Hiram in 1973. Cousin died around 1979. Uncle Bob died in 1985 - he and his brother worked above ground pushing buttons for equipment movement. That's about all I can tell you about them.
