Mary M. (COOPER) ALEXANDER, daughter of John and Mariah COOPER, was born February 14, 1852, and departed this life December 13, 1931, aged seventy-nine years, nine months and twenty-nine days.
She was of a family of eleven children. Three sisters and two brothers survive.
She was married to Hugh ALEXANDER, March 6, 1876. To this happy union nine children were born, five of whom are deceased, Ida and Oma, who lived to womanhood; Willie and Eva, in childhood, and one in infancy. The living are: John, of Dugger, Anthony, of Bloomfield; Tom, of California, and Mary, at home.
She also leaves to mourn their loss nineteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. One of her grandsons, Ira, she reared from a little boy and loved and cherished as her very own. A brother-in-law, Will, lived in the home for many years.
Grandma, as so many knew her, was a quiet, unassuming woman who found her greatest joy in her home and family. She was kind, genial and neighborly and will be missed by many friends, relatives and the loved ones who are left at home.
She united with the Christian church at Koleen, later moving her membership to the Furnace church, where she remained a consistent member.
She had been in failing health for some time, but not until the last three weeks had her condition become grave. Even to the last her thoughts were as expressed in the poem, "Lord, help me live from day to day, in such a self-forgetful way, that even when I kneel to pray, my prayer shall be for others. Help me in all the work I do, to ever be sincere and true, and know that all I'd do for you must needs be done for others. Let self be crucified and slain and buried deep nor rise again; and may all efforts be in vain unless they be for others. And when my work on earth is done, and my new work begun, may I forget the crown I've worn, while thinking still of others.

We desire to extend our sincere thanks to the neighbors and friends for their kindness and assistance after the death of our dear mother. We especially thank Dr. HULL for his untiring services; to Mr. KIDD, the undertaker, for his efficient service; to Rev. RAINS for his consoling words; for the many and beautiful floral offerings, and to those who in any gave us assistance.
HUGH ALEXANDER

Jasper Newton HATFIELD, son of Emanuel and Nancy (ANDERSON) HATFIELD, was born at Owensburg, December 10, 1844, and departed this life at 7:30 a. m. December 21, 1931, being at the time of his death eighty-seven years and eleven days old.
He was the last surviving child of a family of fourteen children, and was reared to manhood in this home where he was born.
On March 10, 1866, he was united in marriage to Louisa BEATY, of Owensburg. To this union were born three children. Soon after this first marriage he moved to Neodesha, Kansas, where he lived for three years and engaged in farming.
He returned to Owensburg about 1870, and here on July 26, 1873, this first companion was called to the life beyond.
On September 13, 1874, he was united in marriage to Mary Frances BRIDWELL. To this union were born six children. On September 1, 1886, he moved with his family to Washington Township, near Lyon, Indiana, and here spent the remaining forty five years of his life.
At the age of eighteen years he united with the Missionary Baptist church at Owensburg, where with fifty other friends and companions, he was baptized in the old Mill Dam supplied from his father's spring, while all nature was covered with a mantle of snow.
He continued to live in this Christian faith, and after moving to Washington Township, he with his companion, became charter member of the Baptist Church at Switz City, under the pastorate of Uncle Billy BAKER, one of the pioneer Baptist preachers of Greene County.
On February 5, 1923, his last companion was called to her home beyond, and since that time he has been cared for by his daughter, Miss Victoria, who gave him every comfort human hands could afford. He lived an exemplary life and was a devoted husband and father, living the golden rule before all his neighbors and friends. On great enjoyment of his was to spend his evenings reading to his family out of his old family Bible. This he continued to do until the last few days of his sickness.
The good morals he set before his children, they will ever hold as a sweet memory of his fine Christian character. He was an obliging neighbor and his pleasant smile always made them feel welcome in his home.
The children by his first union were Theodore and Ora, who preceded him in death, and Charley, now living at Linton. Those by the last union are Mrs. Bayless BENHAM, of Lyons; Mrs. Edward YOUNG, of Petersburg; Mrs. Grace STAFFORD, of Terre Haute; Herschell HATFIELD, of Danville, Illinois, and Victoria, at home, and a daughter who died in infancy. He also leaves sixteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.

It's common knowledge that he married Clarissa Purdy on May 18, 1860; that he himself was born in November, 1835 from the 1900 Census and we even know the names of some of his children from the censuses. But WHO were his parents??? I don't know about you folks, but I sure hate having all that info and not knowing where to attach it. Maybe his mother's surname was Squire???
I'd sure appreciate someone out there in cyberland filling me in. Thanks

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, March 2, 1933, Volume LVII, Number 18, Page , Column , "Pioneer Citizen Dies At Montana Home." [Transcribed on December 12, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Barton W. S. ARMSTRONG, eighty-six years old, native of Jackson Township, near Owensburg, this county, and one of the outstanding stockmen of Montana, died at Great Falls, {Cascade County,} Montana, recently after several months' illness.
He was born June 22, 1846, the son of Ari ARMSTRONG. At an early age he turned to farming and trading and carried on an extensive business as a shipper and dealer in mules and as a cattle feeder. In 1899 he left Indiana and went to Great Falls, where he purchased a sheep ranch comprising 5, 000 acres. Later he increased his holdings to 13,000 acres, acquiring two other ranches. Most of this property is now managed by three sons, Harry, Walter and Webb.
Before going west he was married to Miss Candace GAINEY, of Bedford. Mrs. ARMSTRONG died in Great Falls in 1900.
Mr. ARMSTRONG was known by officials of commission firms all through the East and Middle West and two years ago the official publication of one of the commission companies was dedicated to him.
In addition to the sons mentioned, two others survive, Urmey ARMSTRONG, of Medford, Oregon, and Gayton ARMSTRONG, of Mahnomen, Minnesota.
Mrs. W. J. HAMILTON, of Linton, is a niece, and Mrs. J. M. MCDOWELL, who formerly conducted the old Remington hotel at Linton, was a sister.

Notes-RLJ: It would appear from Ari ARMSTRONG'S Biography, Barton was probably born in Lawrence County rather than Greene County, Indiana. The land patents which Ari received were all located in Lawrence county, i.e.: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Results.asp?QryId=83650.27

Neally Verlin SKINNER was born October 12, 1862, and departed this life February 27, 1933, at the age of seventy years, four months and fifteen days.
He was united in marriage to Miss Emma LEHMAN, January 9, 1884. To this union six children were born, namely: Henry SKINNER, of Linton; Arthur SKINNER, Bloomington; Delta, who preceded him in death in infancy; Mrs. Reuben BLAKER, Bloomfield, and Lexie, at home; twenty-seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mollie COOK, also of Bloomfield; many nephews and nieces, besides a kind and loving companion survive him.
He was converted some years ago at the Allen Chapel church, under Sister MASHON's ministry. Later he renewed his covenant with God, leaving his testimony behind that his soul had gone to be with Jesus.
His only book was the Bible, and he always loved to talk about Jesus and His goodness. He was always ready to help anyone whom he saw was in need, especially did he love his children, and devoted his affections upon them, also his companion by whom he will be greatly missed.
"A precious one from us is gone; a voice we loved is stilled; a place is vacant in our home which never can be filled, a dear one of faith from us has gone to receive the crown that he has won; may each one live for him to meet up in heaven's golden street."
-
We want to thank our friends and neighbors for their kind help in time of sickness and after the death of our dear husband and father, and for the floral offerings. Also Bro. TUTTLE for his kind words of comfort, and the undertaker, George E. KIDD.
WIFE AND CHILDREN.

Bob - Thank you so very much for L. D.'s obituary! It would be interesting to know how many students he taught in his career. I think this makes 413 obituaries for our Owensburg Cemetry book. You have been such a help. Jim Rollins gave us ones that Wilma had and that helped a lot too. I have also been pulling other info off Ancestry.com to put in the book when I can't find an obit.
