Does anyone know anything about a mining accident that occurred abt Nov 1930?
I have always been told that my grandfathers grandfather was crushed to death in a mine in Nov 1930. I'm guessing he was working maybe in the Vandalia Mines near Sullivan or Linton, as that is where his place of employment was in 1918, and I was told he worked in the mining industry all his life.
Any information would be alot of help !!!
Thanks in advance, Misty

Hi. I am trying to sort out my family tree, and I am stuck !!
First of all, the obit for Sarah FRANKLIN (1872-1948) married to Joseph Benjamin Franklin states that her parents were John and Malinda WYMER.
The marriage application for her daughter, (Anna Pearl Franklin to Loris E. Souders) states that her name is Sarah SHEETS. I am thinking that Sarah SHEETS was her grandmother whom she was living with in the 1880 census, but she was under the name Sarah Sheets, not WYMER. This has gotten me totally confused !!
Does anyone have any information of a JOHN OR MALINDA (maiden name unknown) WYMER or SARAH WYMER?
I checked with the Greene County Health Department, but the lady told me that their records only go back to 1885 for births. And the State Health Department only has them back to 1907.
Any information would be GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!! Or if anyone has information on anyone mentioned in the obit could contact me also, as my info for this family is scarse. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!! Here is the full text of her obit:

HASKETT.” [Transcribed on September 21, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Hazel, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth SCOTT, was born August 17, 1891, and departed from this life, October 18, 1921; aged thirty years, two months and one day.
She was united in marriage to Joseph HASKETT on February 17, 1916. The husband with four children—Herbert, Elizabeth, Harley and an infant daughter are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. She is one of a family of twelve children; the mother, one sister and one brother having preceded her to the Great Beyond. The father, four brothers and five sisters still survive.
While Hazel never identified herself with an church, she was friendly to the church; showing much interest in keeping her children in Sunday school.
She was a devoted wife and mother; a kind neighbor, and friend to all.
She was very modest and unassuming, living a life of service to her family and friends.
She has gone from us to that land from whence none return, but we beseech Thee, Lord, to lead onward and upward to Thee and her, where no sorrow or death ever come.
—
We wish to sincerely thank the neighbors and friends for their assistance and comforting words during the illness and after the death of our dear wife and mother.

Samuel, oldest son of John and Miriam SPINKS, was born April 5, 1859, near Koleen, Indiana, and died at his home at Tulip, September 22, 1921, aged sixty-two years, five months and seventeen days.
When about twenty years of age he was united in marriage with Jane MCDONALD. To this union were born three children; Bertha, the oldest, dying in infancy. The wife also died leaving him with two small boys—Everett and Elmer.
For the second time he entered the marriage relation with Mary Jane HORN on February 19, 1888. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom are living. One was still-born, and Charles, the fourth child, died at the age of ten years.
He is survived by his wife and nine children, one half-sister, Mrs. Mollie LEWIS, Bloomfield, and other more distant relatives, and a host of friends and neighbors, who with the family, mourn his untimely departure. The surviving children are: Everett SPINKS, Robison; Elmer, Springville; Mrs. Elsie MORRIS, Bloomfield; Estol, Iowa; Louie, a teacher in the Linton schools; John, Bloomfield; Merle, Ned and Nina, at home.
He grew to manhood at the place where he was born, and lived quite a number of years in the vicinity of Owensburg, then moved to Clifty and settled on what is known as the DUKE farm, living there twenty-two years. He then moved to Tulip on December 26, 1920, where he remained until his death. At these different places he leaves many friends who testify to his worth as a citizen and neighbor. He was an honest, conscientious man in all his dealings; he was just and fair; he was congenial and friendly in disposition; clever and hospitable in his home; his creed was dong good. He was very unassuming, but He who knew his thoughts and intent of the heart, and is not willing that one sparrow shall fall, will surely take account of His children, and every good deed and noble aspiration will receive a just recompense.
He never saw his father who gave his life for his country a short time after his birth. He was raised by his widowed mother during the trying years that followed the Civil War. He (concluded on page five) lived in the time of the little, old log school house when the country could only afford a few weeks or months of school in the year at best, so his education was limited. But that he had an inherent regard for such was manifested in the provisions he made for the education of his children, and truly he has contributed much good to the world in the lives of these children, some of whom have attained a high degree of efficiency.
He was a loving husband and father, a kind neighbor and friend, and will be greatly missed by all, but mostly by those who knew him best, therefore, loved him best. The entire community is in sympathy with those whose hearts are aching and who today mourn the going away of one so dear.
—
We desire to thank the neighbors and friends for their help, kindness and sympathy in our sad bereavement in the death of our beloved husband and father, Samuel SPINKS.
MRS. MARY SPINKS
AND FAMILY.

Strosnider.” [Transcribed on September 18, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
The spirit of Mrs. Ica {sic} (NOEL) STROSNIDER went to the great Father of life at her father’s home place near Bethel Christian church, Greene County, February 2, 1916. She was born March 17, 1888, aged twenty-seven years, ten months and fifteen days.
She was the only and beloved daughter of Peter and Alice NOEL. She was married to Virgil STROSNIDER, September, 1909. To this union were born three children, Ray, Bert and Dorothy. Besides a large circle of relatives and friends she is survived by her husband, children, parents and the following brothers: Joseph, Clinton, Burgess and Benton NOEL, her parents and brothers living in Bloomfield.
She developed in her earthly life, love and dutifulness for her parents, sisterly affection for her brothers, devotion for her husband, a big motherly heart for her children, loyalty to her many friends and faithfulness to her God and Savior.
When fifteen years of age she gave her life to Jesus at the Bethel Christian Church, and when she came to Bloomfield she united with the Christian church at that place, and last September she united with the Bethel church again, as her home was so near this church.
She was given great sustaining graced from her Savior in her sickness, which resulted in her home going.
As she approached the “great divide” between this life and her future home she triumphantly said, “O, I am so happy,” “O death where is thy sting,” “O, grave where is thy victory.”
Her unselfishness showed itself in her suffering, as she counseled her loved ones not to grieve for her, assuring them of peace, rest and safety in which was about to enter. Manifesting much patience and fortitude she peacefully bade earth adieu to be greeted by her savior beyond.
The funeral services were conducted by Elder Logan HATFIELD, Friday, February 4, 1916, at the Bethel church. Interment in the Dishman Cemetery.

Carrie (BURCHAM) HEATON, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert CUSHMAN, October 14, 1921, after more than a week’s illness. She was born August 6, 1841, her age being eighty years, two months and eight days.
She was the fifth daughter of David and Violet BURCHAM, who were among the first families to settle in Greene County when the state was very young. Eight daughters and five sons came to their home—seven daughters and five sons living to be men and women. The all have passed on before she was called. She was very lonely when the last one of these happy associates went away two years ago.
More than sixty years ago Mrs. HEATON became a member of the Richland Baptist Church during the pastorate of Rev. Martin FULK. She and her husband were very active members of the church for more than forty years, he being a deacon in the church. She believed in true, heartfelt religion, and was true to the faith of our fathers.
She was a teacher in the public schools during the Civil War, and took great interest in the work.
March 28, 1866, she was married to James W. HEATON, a soldier of the Civil War. He passed on before more that eleven years ago. Four children came to bless their home—Nora, Elza, Anna and Thomas. All were with her during her last illness except Elza, who is in Phoenix, Arizona, and could not be with her.
All that could be done by loving hands was done by her beloved children to relieve her of the pain she had to suffer.
She has gone to live in the mansion prepared by the dear Savior.
Funeral services were held at the home of Robert CUSHMAN, Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. E. E. ALDRICH. Interment was in Grand View Cemetery.

Margaret Francis {sic} NEAL was born January 25th, 1840, in Boone County, Kentucky, died at her home in Bloomfield, Indiana, September 28, 1921, aged 81 years, 8 months and 3 days. With her parents she came to Indiana in 1854 and settled in Jackson Township, Greene County, near the old Clifty church and united with the Methodist church at that place.
She was married to William H. RILEY, December 3rd, 1857, who died in the service of his country October 34, 1863, being a soldier of the CO E 97TH REGT IND VOL INF. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Martha J. RECORD and Bailey M. RILEY who survive.
For a second time she entered the marriage relation with Thompson LONG, June 17, 1871, to this union were born two children, Pauline D. who died May 6th, 1874 and Byron F. LONG of California, surviving. Mr. LONG, her second husband, died June 30, 1881; again she was left to care for her family.
She was married to Mr. John CRITES, December 23rd, 1883, to this union no children were born but she took into her large mother heart six step-children all of whom survive, Alma A., Alice, Erastus, George G., Sarah E. and Julia F. CRITES, all these children together with the husband and brothers and other more distant relatives and a host of friends and neighbors mourn their loss.
Aft her marriage to Mr. CRITES she united with the Baptist church at Calvertville and was faithful until death, her life being full she was ready to depart, and the reaper is always very close to the long standing corn.
Fannie as she was familiarly called was kind and gentle in disposition, with very pleasing manners was naturally refined, possessing all the attributes of a perfect lady. Her personality was above the average, she was neat and clean in person, always manifesting excellent taste in dress, she was a lover of the beautiful in nature and her home was surrounded with flowers.
In former years she was very active in church work, entering the service of her Master at about the age of 17, she clothed herself with strength and honor, she looked well to the ways of her household, she ate not the bread of idleness, truly her children can call her blessed, her husband also can praise her in the gates.
It has been said that Mother, Home and Heaven were the three sweetest words in the language and no one suffers and sacrifices more than a true mother and after a long life full of service this mother has folded her tired hands in rest, and after weeks of patient suffering has slipped away from us, and gone to a brighter and better home, where there will be no more sickness, or sorrow, pain and suffering and she will live the new life in Christ Jesus.

She was one of a family of eight children—two sisters and two brothers having preceded her to the Great Beyond.
About 1865 the family came to Indiana, where she spent the remainder of her life, except the two last years spent visiting her children and relatives in Missouri and Iowa.
She was married to William HOSTETER {sic}, September 29, 1870. This union was blessed with seven children—four boys and three girls. They are: James, of Vincennes; Robert, of Burlington Junction, Missouri; Solomon, who departed this life twenty-six years ago at the early age of nineteen; Howard, near Bloomfield; Mary HUDSON, of Mount Ayr, Iowa; Ada FAUCETT, of Solsberry, Elva KELLER, of Lyons.
In her early womanhood she united with the Congregational church, later the Methodist church at Greene County Chapel. Because of her affliction she spent her life mostly at home, rearing her children.
She was a kind and loving mother, a good wife and neighbor.
For the last few weeks she was confined to her bed where she patiently bore her sufferings until the Master called her home.
She leaves to mourn her departure a husband, six children, two brothers, a sister, thirty grandchildren, and four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

We wish to thank the friends and neighbors of Lyons for their kindness during the illness and after the death of our darling mother.

She was the only daughter of James H. and Jennie {E. (PHILLIPS)} PEARSON, her two brothers having preceded her in death.
She was married to Charles C. PHELPS, of St. Louis, and leaves a little daughter, Jennie, two years old
She united with the Methodist church at this place eight years ago, but at the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist church at St. Louis.
For several months past she had been ill of tuberculosis, and was taken to a farm, where a room was built and arranged for her comfort, and everything that her loved ones could do was done for her but to no avail. She expressed herself as anxious to go to be with her savior and loved ones, and she arranged plans for her burial.
Besides her daughter and parents, she is survived by many relatives and friends to mourn her departure.

Mary Elizabeth (JOHNSON) MILLER was born near Senecaville, Guernsey County, Ohio, January 24, 1844, and died at Terre Haute February 10, 1916, aged seventy-two years and seventeen days.
Her father with the family came to Indiana when she was about twenty years old and settled in Greene County, in which county she resided until a little over two years ago. Since that time her home as been in Terre Haute.
She was united in marriage to John Alexander MILLER December 28, 1865. To this union were born four children. The oldest having preceded the mother to the great beyond in infancy, thus leaving the husband and three daughters, namely:— Mrs. W. O. RYAN, of Laton, California; Mrs. J. M BRUNER, of near White Hall, and Mrs. E. W. WATKINS, of Terre Haute. She also leaves two sisters—Mrs. William HOSTETTER, of Lyons, and Mrs. Armintha Evans CROW, of Pomona, Kansas—and three brothers, John T. JOHNSON, of Mineral, Reuben JOHNSON, of Bedford, and Robert W. JOHNSON, of Bloomington, besides a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her departure. But we mourn not as for one who has no hope.
She was converted when about sixteen years of age. Some time after marriage she united with the Congregational Church at Solsberry, which church she was a member at time of her death.
She was a good wife, a kind and loving mother and her heart and help went out in loving sympathy to the poor and needy.
She had been a patient sufferer for a number of years until God saw fit after a short illness of pneumonia to call her home. The funeral was preached at Solsberry last Monday by Rev. J. D. CRANE.
