THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, August 15, 1912, Volume XXXV, Number 39, Page 1, Columns 2 & 3, “DIED AT HIS FARM. Simeon Smith, One of Greene County’s Wealthiest Farmers, Succumbs to Bright’s Disease.” [Transcribed on August 22, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
The people of this community were shocked Tuesday evening by the announcement that Simeon SMITH, a respected citizen, had died suddenly at the home of Cyrus ISENOGLE, a tenant on one of Mr. SMITH’S farms in Washington Township. He had gone there Monday to look after his farms and incidentally to visit with the families who reside on his farms. He was not well and had not been in good health for some time. When he started home about 10 o’clock Tuesday forenoon he felt faint and told Mr. ISENOGLE he would have to wait awhile. He went into the house and steadily grew worse. His physician, Dr. J. W. GRAY, was summoned and administered to him, and his condition grew better, but after noon he took sick again and continued seriously sick until relieved by death about 6 p.m. The immediate cause of his death was uremic poisoning, brought on from Bright’s disease. His decline in health covers a period of about five years.
Mr. SMITH was a good man and he has been a respected resident of this place for over fifteen years, having moved here from the farm where he died. He was a firm friend to those he loved and he extended many charities to the deserving and especially to his relatives.
He had contributed liberally to the M. E. church of this place, and has made several substantial gifts to DePauw College and Moore’s Hill College. Only a few days ago he gave an additional $2,000 to Moore’s Hill College. He also gave the Bloomfield public library a substantial sum, and, it is said, his will provides still further contributions to DePauw College.
Mr. SMITH had always been successful as a farmer, and it is estimated his lands and personal securities will aggregate $300,000. He was probably the wealthiest man in Greene County.
The deceased was born in Vallonia, Jackson County, Indiana, March 16, 1839, and departed this life Tuesday, August 13, 1912; aged seventy-three years, four months and twenty-seven days.
On March 26, 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda CARR, who also died suddenly at the family home in Bloomfield, March 3, 1908. No children were born to this union.
Of his own family only two sisters, Mrs. BURRELL and Mrs. MILLER, of Seymour, survive him, although he leaves nephews and nieces and other relatives and a host of friends by whom he was loved and highly esteemed, that mourn his death and his departure will be an irreparable loss to them.
He understood the seriousness of his ailments and had made preparations for his home-going. He desired his faithful pastor, Rev. G. H. REIBOLD, of the M. E. church, to preside at his funeral. He preferred that the last rites be held at his home, but owning to the illness of his pastor he gave directions that the funeral be conducted from his beloved church, that it might be more convenient for the pastor, so considerate was he for those he loved.
Mr. SMITH has lived a most exemplary and upright Christian life. Generosity, honor and strictest honesty characterized all his extensive business transactions.
In his death the sisters loose an affectionate brother, his nieces and nephews a most devoted uncle, his neighbors a kind and generous friend, Bloomfield a splendid and an exemplary citizen, the church its most generous supporter. The heart-felt sympathy of this church and community go out today to the bereaved sisters and relative.
The funeral services will be held in the M. E. church to-morrow (Friday) at 10 o’clock a. m., conducted by Rev. G. H. REIBOLD.
Interment in Grand View Cemetery.

THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Tuesday, October 19, 1926, Volume LXV, Number 85, Page 3, Column 3, “MARION HATFIELD DIES FOLLOWING ACCIDENT.” [Transcribed on August 19, 2005 by RLJ from the original newspaper on file in the office of the Recorder of Greene County, Court House, Bloomfield, Indiana.]
The funeral of Marion HATFIELD, who died Saturday afternoon at the Linton City hospital, was held yesterday afternoon at the home of his niece, Mrs. Charles MANSFIELD.
Mr. HATFIELD had been taken to the hospital following an accident in which both of his legs were crushed when he was run over by a train on the Big Four road at Elliston shortly after noon Saturday. The nature of the injuries made it necessary to amputate both legs, one between the hip and knee and the other just above the ankle. The unfortunate man died immediately following the operation due to the shock and great loss of blood.
The remains were brought here and taken to the home of his niece.
He is survived by his father, Jerry HATFIELD, a well known resident of this city and a Civil War veteran. He also leaves one brother, Ot HATFIELD, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Nora (DUGGER) WALKER AND Mrs. Nannie WORKMAN.
HATFIELD, who was a section hand on the Big Four road, formerly the E. & I. road at Elliston, was in the act of driving a spike as a freight train was switching nearby. Other workmen, who witnessed the accident, said that he apparently was unaware of the approach of the train on the track where he was at work, and as he stood directly in the path of the engine, he was run down and his legs were crushed beneath the wheels.

There are some Greene County newspapers back to the late 1800's on microfilm
at the Indiana State Library. The link to their Greene Co. holdings is:

Looks like the Bloomfield News is available for 1898.
