THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, February 15, 1945, Volume LXX, Number 12, Page 2, Column 4, “OBITUARY.” [Transcribed on December 13, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Lilburn Alvadore WILSON, son of Samuel and Sarah Anne (JACKSON) WILSON, was born June 7, 1869 in Jackson Township. He departed this life February 7, 1945 at the age of seventy-five years, eight months, at his home in South Bloomfield where he had resided for the past 45 years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Bloomfield for the past 37 years.
He grew to manhood on the farm with his father and on September 19, 1889 he was married to Nancy E. BEYERS {sic} who grew up on the farm adjoining his father’s. To this union were born five children, namely: Raymond C. of Palestine, Illinois; Dessie LESTER; Ruth BENNETT, and Esther SHIELDS all of Bloomfield. One son Ralph, preceded him in death last July.
Most of his married life was spent in Bloomfield where he served as town Marshall. He was also employed by Showers Brother Company until 1942 when he was compelled to give up his work on account of ill health. He made friends quickly and was always considerate of others. Alvadore will be sadly missed by all who came in contact with him.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, four children, a brother Lafayette, of Bedford and two sisters, Adeline EDINGTON, of Bedford and Martha TAPP of Oolitic. Ten grandchildren, 5 great grand children, besides a host of relatives and friends.
“Our hears are filled with sorrow,
A loved one has gone from us;
But there will be a glad tomorrow
Provided by the One and Just Who guides our footsteps forward,
To meet those who’ve gone on before,
Where they will be waiting to greet us
Just inside Heavens’ door.”

We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to those who gave their services during the illness and death of our husband and father.

WILSON.” [Transcribed on December 12, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Like a ship that’s left its moorings
And sailed bravely out to sea,
Another loved one has passed away in calm serenity.
But there are promises of a greater joy
Than life could hold in store,
For God has planned a richer life
Beyond the unseen shore.
Ralph Edwin WILSON, son of Alvadore and Nancy (BYERS) WILSON was born in Bloomfield, Indiana, January 18, 1896; he passed to his eternal home at the family residence in South Bloomfield, July 27, 1944, at the age of Forty-eight years, six months and nine days. He attended the Bloomfield Schools and grew to manhood in the community where he was born.
On August 31, 1918 he was united in marriage to Rose SMITH of Willow Hill, Illinois. To this happy union five children were born, three of whom, James, Evelyn and Helen died in infancy, Marjorie Marie WARREN of Bloomfield and Claude Edwin survive.
He was a member of the Bloomfield Methodist Church but for the past several years his services have been given to the Wesleyan Methodist Church of the community in which he lived. During his illness Ralph called upon his Heavenly Father in prayer and when that prayer was answered, he realized more fully than ever before the power of that Divine Land.
He was a very devoted husband and father, always doing things for the comfort of his loved ones. Ralph was a very rigid in his determination to be fair and square with his fellowmen and by his honesty, dependability and friendliness he acquired many friend. He will be greatly missed in the home and by his parents, and his friendly greeting and wave of his hand will be missed by the entire neighborhood.
Besides the devoted wife and two children he leaves to mourn his departure, the parents, one grandchild, Bobbie Keith WARREN, one brother, Ray WILSON, of Palestine, Illinois and three sisters, Mrs. Dessie LESTER, Mrs. Ruth BENNETT and Esther SHIELDS all of Bloomfield, several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
We linger here a little while, and then are gone
Like ghostly dews that disappear when comes the dawn
And like the flaming dawn that dies before the day
Which fades when darkness falls, we too, soon pass away.
But since the dew returns to kiss the grass,
Since darkness comes and dawning makes the shadows pass,
I laugh at death, for when I go from hill and glen,
I know that I shall leave this clay to live again.

CARD OF THANKS.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday, May 13, 1904, Volume XXVIII, Number 25, Page 1, Column 3, “DAVID LEWIS DEAD. A Martin County Pioneer Dies at His Home Near Owensburg.” [Transcribed on December 11, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
David LEWIS, an early settler, died last Sunday morning at 6:30 o’clock at his home in Jackson Township, one mile south of Owensburg, after an illness of six weeks, during the last two weeks of which he was unable to take but little nourishment.
He was born October 30, 1823, in Woodford County, Kentucky, and when seven years old moved to Martin County, Indiana, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Yelviton LEWIS, who settled near the line that now divides Greene and Martin counties. Here his life was spent until fifteen years ago, when he moved to his present farm of nearly 600 acres south of Owensburg.
He was a soldier in the Civil war, enlisting in Martin County, and served two years, from 1861 to 1863 in COMPANY K, FORTY-NINTH REGIMENT, INDIANA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY.
He was one of twelve children and outlived his parents, brothers and sisters. About three years ago his health began to fail and on account of his large property interest his family had O. W. SHRYER, of this place, appointed as his guardian. Since that time his affairs have been well cared for and his family hoped that the relief from his business cares would tend to lengthen his life, but he was too feeble to regain his lost strength, and steadily declined in health until the end.
………..union were born twelve children, five of whom are dead and seven with the mother survive. The deceased are James Whitcomb, Hannigan, Jane SIMPSON, Laura ROBERTS and Willard. The surviving children are Noah, who lives with the mother; William D., Green B., Mahala WEBB, Grant, Exy PRICE, all of Martin County, and Charles, of Vinita, Missouri.
At one time, David LEWIS owned 4,000 acres of land, principally in Martin County, in addition to a great deal of personal property. This he made by his own industry and careful business methods. After the death of his first child, he gave the surviving eleven each a farm of 120 acres, and later in life, sold the remainder of his Martin County land to his children at half price. He leaves an estate of nearly $50,000. All his surviving children are considered wealthy and it is said the least land owned by anyone of them is 600 acres.
He was a member of the Baptist Church and gave liberally toward the support of the churches.
The funeral was held at the Pleasant Grove Church in Martin County, last Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. William BAKER, assisted by Rev. Joseph ALLEN and Rev. J. D. CRANE. Interment in the cemetery adjoining the church yard.

Bill e-mailed me and gave me a heads up to check the Greene County Board. I am Leona's great-granddaughter. My grandmother, Amelia, known as Polly, is still alive and living in Linton. She was the only daughter of George and Leona Wilson. My mother has been putting together a scrapbook of pictures and information from their family. I had the name of the ship that the family came over on and it was lost in the Ellis Island records. I can get more information, though. It is interesting to hear my grandmother talk about it. She remembers a lot of people. My great-grandmother did die a couple of years ago in February.

Thank you again.
"The History of Greene & Sulluvan Counties" sounds like a book I need to see.
I have "The Early History of Greene County, In." by Uncle Jack Baber. In this book, there is a mention of James Harvey being a teacher. But if according to "The History of Greene & Sullivan Counties", James Harvey started teaching in 1820, my James Harvey would have been only 4 yrs. old. There has to be a different James Harvey.
In the 1850 census, Sullivan Co., In. there was a James J. Harvey age 51. This could be the teacher. I haven't done any research on this man. This one could have also been in Company K of the Eightieth Regiment who was discharged in 1863, because my James Harvey died in 1858.
Thank you again for all your help. Sometimes it helps to bounce ideas off of someone else.

Just to clarify things - Newberry is NOT in Daviess County, it is in Greene County. I used to live there and at one time lived right on the line between Greene and Daviess Counties. I now live in Daviess County.
The 1879 Atlas actually shows the Towns, Ranges, and section numbers for all the sections in Jackson Twp., however they are a little hard to make out. The Greene Co. GenWeb site has a clearer map showing the same info [includes abbreviations like R III W and T 6 N], but without the ownership info to clutter things up: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ingreene/maps/map2.htm
Also, the Greene county Highway Department publishes a great map showing all the cities, villages, townships, towns, ranges, section numbers, roads, cemeteries, etc. in the county. I purchased mine directly from the highway department a few years ago - nominal cost $4-5?
The property description would typically include a county, town & range. section number, quarter section and quarter-quarter section. Jackson Twp. is entirely in Town 6 North. It is in Range 3 West [near the Lawrence Co. line] and Range 4 West [shared with Taylor Twp.]. Knowing the Town & Range, the property description should include the Section number. Within the sections [usually 640 acres], the land is divided into quarters [NE, NW, SW & SE]. Each quarter section [usually 160 acres] can be divided again into quarters. These would usually be 40 acres, which was a common multiple of farming land. This means the descriptions end up with things like "SW quarter of the the NE quarter of ....." This would mean the NE quarter of the section and then within that, the SW portion.
Hope this helps a little.
Jerry

the land is laid out. Does anyone know where I might get a plat map of the
county? They purchased land in Jackson Township. Thank you
