Found this interesting story in Goodspeeds 1884 History of Greene & Sullivan Counties on page 303.
An Appalling Accident
"In March, 1876, an appalling accident occured on Section 21, which, from its number of deaths, is unparalleled in the history of Greene County. This was the explosion of the boiler of the steam saw mill owned by Hunter Brothers. The boiler had run dry and was red hot when cold water was pumped into it. No sooner had this occurred, than with a report that was heard miles away, the boiler burst, causing death and destruction on every hand. Nineteen persons were present at the time of the explosion, and of these twelve were killed outright, one was mortally wounded: and six were more or less seriously injured. The following is a list of the killed: James Hunter, John Hunter, John Spelts, Absalom Vandeventer, John Wilkie, two little sons of David Hunter, a son of John Hamilton, son of George Rea, son of Henry Sarver, son of George Bender and a son of Jacob Brubaker. James Hunter, the first
named, had a son present who received injuries that resulted in his death shortly thereafter. It was not long until hundreds of people were on the scene, drawn thither by the report that the boiler of Hunter’s saw mill had burst. Mothers, daughters and sisters were there, bewailing the loss of loved ones with tears and lamentations, while the horrified glances and pale faces of men who were busily at work in search of the remains of the dead added to the sorrow of the scene. May Highland Township never be visited with another such disaster, but, on the contrary, may it thrive and flourish, its citizens prosper, its abundant resources be developed, and then Highland Township will be second to none in Greene County."
Unfortunately, this is the only mention of any "Spelts" or "Pelts" in the book.

Mr. Jackson,
I am doing research on the Shields family that lived in the Hackettstown, NJ area in the late 1700's-1900's. The Shields family went west, our shields family lived awhile in Missouri, Kansas and finally in the state of Washington.
The reason your note was of interest was the Lewis & Nancy Shields family were friends with the Jackson family, Nancy's sister, Mary married a Jackson in Chester, NJ and moved to Carthage, MO. Do you know this family?
Thanks,
Sadie

I do believe these census show that John is son of George and Martha Houser. I intend to send for John's death certificate and see what it says. I'll post it if one is found.

Kerry. I think these are your families, they are the only ones who fit in the censuses. In the 1850 census for Ind, Montgomery county, Coal Creek township, page 30, there was a family headed by George Westfall, 30, a farmer, born in Ohio, and included Martha A, 27, Ky, - James, 8, Ind, - William, 5, Ind, - John, 4, Ind, and Bezy, 2, Ind. In the 1860 census for the same township, page 34, the family was again headed by George Westfall, 39, farmer, Ohio, and included Martha A, 37, Ky, - James, 18, Ind, - John, 14, Ind, - Vezey, 12, Ind, - Enos, 10, Ind, - Nancy E, 6, and Christian C, 4, Ind. In the 1850 census for Ind, Fountain county, Cain township, page 15, there was a family headed by Adam Bratton, 25, a farmer, Ky, and included Mary A, 20, Ky, - John M, 1, and Desire E, 1/12, Ind. Could not find this family in the 1860 census. Hope this helps. Don

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, August 14, 1912, Volume XXXV, Number 39, Page 1, Columns 5 & 6, “OLD PIONEER DEAD—Prominent Highland Township Citizen Dies Suddenly at His Home of Heart Dropsy.” [Transcribed on October 11, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Thomas J. OSBURN, one of Highland Township’s oldest residents, died suddenly at his home, two and a half miles southeast of Calvertville, about eight o’clock Monday morning, August 12, of heart dropsy, while sitting in a chair on the porch. He was aged seventy-three years, eight months and eighteen days.
He was a son of Jesse L. and Cinda OSBURN, and was one of a family of eleven children—seven boys and four girls.
He was born and raised in Highland Township, and with the exception of two years, has resided all his life at the old homestead where he died.
He was a life-long Democrat, and was also noted for his upright life. Kindness of disposition and liberality. In politics he was true to his party. He served his township as trustee from 1900 to 1904 with honor to himself and credit to his constituents.
He was a loving father, a true friend and a good neighbor; was always willing to help those who sought his aid. To know him was to love and admire him.
At an early age he united with the Baptist Church near his home, but which has long since been abandoned. Later he became a member of the M. E. church at Old Liberty. It has also long been abandoned, but he continued in its faiths and teachings till his death.
He was married to Miss Martha DARROUGH February 9, 1860, and to this union three daughters were born—Adelaide, who died in 1904; Mrs. George GOODWIN, of Highland Township, and Arabelle, who resided at home and administered to her father in his declining years. His wife preceded him to the better land January 10, 1881.
Of his brothers and sisters, seven are living, namely: Mrs. Margaret WELCH, Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Martha GOODWIN, Highland Township, Mrs. Charity MCDONALD, of Kansas; S. D. OSBURN, Omaha, Nebraska; Isaac OSBURN, Camargo, Illinois, and Jesse G. OSBURN, whose whereabouts is not known. None of the brothers and sisters were present at the funeral except N. W. OSBURN.
The great esteem in which he was held in his community was attested by the large concourse of people in attendance at the funeral, which was held at the Tulip Church of God Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Henry FLORY, after which the remains were laid to rest in the church yard cemetery.
—
We wish to extend our heartiest thanks to all for the great kindness shown, and loving services rendered, during the illness, death and burial of our beloved father, T. J. OSBURN.
MRS. ALVERTA GOODWIN,
MISS ARABELLE OSBURN
