Need a Map?Find It Fast!
A new map locator tool is now available in the USGS online store and
provides a quick and easy way to find and order a topographic map.
The
catalog is online at http://store.usgs.gov.
Topographic maps have long been popular with hikers, campers,
hunters,
and other outdoor enthusiasts, as well as city planners, engineers,
and other business people and are available for all locations in the
United States at various levels of detail.
The map locator will show a map of the United States where a point
can
be selected and re-drawn with more detail, depending on the zoom
factor selected. At certain zoom levels green boundaries and map
names are displayed to identify maps available for purchase.
Another search feature will display all USGS products available for a
geographic point selected.
Customers can also bypass the map and directly select a state/region
from drop-down menus. An additional drop-down menu is available to
select product lines.
Map searches can be made by using the Geographic Names Information
System (GNIS) which contains information of nearly 2 million physical
and cultural geographic features in the United States--from populated
places, schools, reservoirs, and parks to streams, valleys, springs,
and ridges.
The products can also be ordered from a network of authorized USGS
retailers. A listing of the retailers, by State, is available on the
Store. For more information about the USGS and the products it
offers, call 303-202-4200, or 1-888-ASK-USGS, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MST,
Monday through Friday.
The USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific
information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize the loss
of
life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological,
energy and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of
life.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, November 23, 1933,Volume LVIII, Number 4, Page 8, Columns 1 & 2, “Civil War Veteran Dies At Linton Home.” [Transcribed May 19, 2004 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Taps sounded Saturday night at 8 o’clock for Samuel H. ROBERTS, aged eighty-four, reducing the ranks of Civil war veterans in Linton community to less than half a dozen.
The one of the few remaining soldiers of the Civil war passed away last evening at the home of a son, Samuel H. ROBERTS, Jr., in South Linton. The aged veteran suffered a stroke about six years ago. This was followed by another stroke Wednesday morning, which proved fatal to the vet.
Mr. ROBERTS, was born in Rone, Tennessee, December 31, 1849. He was a volunteer in the Civil war, serving with COMPANY I, NINTH REGIMENT TENNESSEE CAVALRY. He enlisted in the service on January 26,1864, being a soldier when only fifteen years of age. He was inspired to enlist for the war since his father, James J. ROBERTS, was a captain during the Civil war. Mr. ROBERTS served in the Civil war until he was honorably discharged September 11, 1865.
During the pasty thirty-two years the aged veteran made Linton his home.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, December 24, 1936,Volume LXI, Number 7, Page 1, Column 2, “SUDDEN DEATH ENDS PLANS FOR ANNIVERSARY. Claude E. Stone Dies of Heart Attack on Evening of Wedding Anniversary.” [Transcribed May 19, 2004 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Sudden death Friday brought an abrupt end to plans for Mr. and Mrs. Claude E. STONE to celebrate their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary at their home in the White Rose community, west of Linton.
Employed as a night watchman for the Central Indiana Coal Company, Mr. STONE, fifty-five years old, returned home from work early Friday morning. He had been in the house only a few minutes talking with his wife when he suddenly dropped to the floor. He was dead a few minutes later. The physician who was summoned said hardening of the arteries caused his untimely death. It was explained that Mr. STONE had apparently been in the best of health. He had been employed by the local mining company for several years.
The STONES were united in marriage December 18, 1901, and Friday was to have been celebrated by the couple in commemoration of the wedding. Mr. STONE marked his fifty-fifth birthday on November 22.
Surviving are the widow, Anna {(CARMICHAEL) STONE}; three daughters, Mrs. Fay BENNETT, of Linton; Mrs. Wilma MAYFIELD, of Terre Haute, and Mrs. Isabelle COOPER, of Linton; three sons, Victor STONE, of Linton; Cleal STONE, of Linton rural route, and Riley STONE, at home; one sister Mrs. Attie SHIPMAN, of Bloomfield.
Last rites were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Linton North Mission church. Interment was in Morris Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Isabelle CARMICHAEL, pioneer resident of Greene County, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Morton FLOYD, near Bloomfield, Indiana, October 7, 1933, aged eighty-one years, four months and one day.
Mrs. CARMICHAEL was born in Jackson Township, June 6, 1852, the daughter of David and Charlotte {LEWIS} HUDSON. The father and mother passed away leaving the brothers and sisters to fight life’s battles alone.
Isabelle was married to Riley CARMICHAEL in 1878. To this union seven children were born, four of whom passed away in infancy, and the husband passed away eleven years ago. Surviving children are Sam CARMICHAEL, of Martinsville; Mrs. Claud STONE, of Linton, and Mrs. Morton FLOYD, of Bloomfield; also seventeen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one brother, Sam HUDSON, of Robison, and other relatives, and a host of friends, who will miss her.
She united with the Methodist church in early life and later moved her membership to the Christian church at Koleen. After the death of her husband she left the old home, going to live with her daughter’s family in the Furnace neighborhood. She then placed her membership with the Furnace church where she was an active member until her health failed.
She was a dutiful wife, a kind and loving mother, good neighbor and friend to everyone, always having a smile and warm handclasp for those she met, and loved to go to all community affairs and there do her part as one of God’s children.
After her health began to decline she often expressed her willingness to go to her reward, and death had no terror, as she was prepared to meet her Maker.
“Sleep and rest, Dear Mother; thy work on earth is o’er; soon we’ll meet you in heaven on God’s eternal shore.
—
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to our friends and neighbors for their many acts of kindness, to Dr. TURNER for his untiring efforts, to Jenkins and Son for their efficient service, to Rev. FLOYD and Rev. TUTTLE for their consoling words, the beautiful floral offerings, the singers, and to all whom contributed in any way during the sickness and death of our dear mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Morton FLOYD,
Mr. and Mrs. Claud STONE,
Mr. and Mrs. Sam CARMICHAEL.

A. F. FIELDS was born on October 8, 1864, at Owensburg, Indiana. He was the eldest son of Hansford and Charlotte {HATFIELD} FIELDS, one of the old and respected families of this city. He lived in this vicinity a great part of his early life and in recent years has lived in Indianapolis.
He has finished his work and is released from all his pain and suffering and was so ready to let loose of all earthly cares and rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
He was a lovely father and kind and loving husband, a dear brother, and a friend to his fellow man. He was affiliated with various fraternal orders, the Masons, the Odd-Fellows, and a long and timely member of the Christian church. He never lost sight of the one great comforter, and the Bible was always at his side during his illness. While the dew was still on the grass and the sun was awakening its appearance, he slept away so peacefully. So calmly did he surrender all and accepted the Master’s statement, “Not my will but Thine be done.
He sleeps today where years ago he slept; the dear old home where he was bred and born, a peaceful watch his loving mother kept, and gently waked him at the coming morn. T’was here he passed his happy boyhood hours; twas here his mother led his steps aright; within the family circle round the fire, he loved to pass the dreary winter nights. No loving mother’s kiss can wake him now; he has nobly finished up his earthly task; troubles cannot frown his pallid brow, he rests with God, what better can we ask?
He is survived by a wife, Nora FIELDS; A daughter, Mrs. Hazel CORNELL; four step-children, Mrs. Bess BLAZER, Mrs. Ruth BARNES, Mrs. Ruby GREGG and Paul STEM, and four sisters and one brother, namely: Mrs. Fon SWEENEY, of Louisville, Kentucky; Mrs. John RILEY, of Martinsville; Mrs. Charles PAGE, of Linton, and Mrs. Erie SNYDER, of Indianapolis, and C. B. FIELDS, of Owensburg.
The funeral and interment occurred at Owensburg.

Martha Lutetia GROVE was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth HASLER. She was born April 5, 1865, and passed away October 14, 1931, at the age of sixty-six years, five months and nine days.
She was one of a family of fourteen children, all deceased except one brother, James HASLER, of Bloomfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret WAGNER, of Olney, Illinois, and Sarah HASLER, of Bloomfield.
She was united in marriage to John B. GROVE, September 11, 1891. To this union four children were born, two of them preceding her in death. Two little boys, Curtis died at the age of four years and John Carter, at the age of three years. Two daughters are left to mourn their loss, Mrs. Edith GRAY, and Mrs. Esther JOHNSON, of Bloomfield; also one little granddaughter, Betty GRAY, whom she loved as her very own.
Her husband, John B. GROVE, died June 7, 1927, and those who were dearest to her have seen her loss of interest in many things; her grief she suffered quietly, yet her loved ones knew she was lonely and was failing in health. She has not been in rugged health for some time; however, when she was taken ill, thirteen days before her going, her friends did not realize just how serious her condition was until the word was given out that she had passed away in the quite hours of the night, October 14.
She was industrious, always looking well to the welfare of her family and home. She was quiet, unassuming and ready at all times to help a neighbor or anyone in hours of sickness or need. She was a Christian, giving her life from early girlhood in the service of the Master. She was a member of the Methodist church of this place. She will be missed by her family, her church and her friends, and one sister, Sarah, who has lived with her and been her constant companion in the home for more than twenty-four years, has shared her joys and her sorrows, will feel her loss deeply. However, when you , the ones who loved her best here, think of the many she had loved dearly—over there, waiting—think of her as she bade you goodnight—to them—good morning.
—
We wish to thank our many friends and neighbors, Dr. HULL and Dr. VANSANDT and Mr. DAVIDSON for their kindness and assistance during the sickness and after the death of our beloved mother and sister.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday December 7, 1933,Volume LVIII, Number 6, Page 7, Columns 1 & 2, “DEATH’S HARVEST.” [Transcribed May 18, 2004 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Mrs. Sarah E. GROVE was born in Bloomfield, Indiana, April 21, 1875. She was the third child of Emanuel and Laura (STROPES) BACH.
She was married to Lawson GROVE, February 3, 1894.
Mrs. GROVE was a devoted member of the Methodist church and a conscientious Christian from childhood. She always attended services and took an active part in the affairs of the church when her health permitted.
She was interested and concerned with all things that were good and for the betterment and welfare of the community and numbered her friends by all who knew her. She was always more concerned about the welfare of her family and friends than herself. She has spent the greater part of her life assisting and administering aid to her relatives and friends.
She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, who was seriously ill at the time of her death, and two sons, Clyde, of Bloomfield, and Edward, of Cincinnati, Ohio; also a grandson, Eddie, Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Lena FAITH, of Washington, Indiana and a brother Jess BACH, of Bloomfield. Most of her life was spent in and around Bloomfield, Indiana. Her sudden death has brought deep grief to all her relatives and friends. She was a loving wife and devoted mother. By her death, Bloomfield has lost a splendid woman.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, December 3, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. FARR, pastor of the First Methodist church, and interment was in Grand View cemetery.

We wish to express our thanks to our neighbors and friends for their kindness shown us at the death of our beloved mother and wife.

Lawson GROVE, son of Jacob and Mary A. GROVE, was born May 1, 1871, and passed away December 17, 1933{correct date was November 30, 1933}at the home of his son, Edward, at Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of sixty-two years, six months and twenty-nine days.
He was married to Sarah E. BACH, February 3, 1894. Of his immediate family, two sons, Clyde and Edward, survive him, and of his father’s family but one sister, Miss Belle GROVE, of Evansville.
Most of his active life was spent in Bloomfield. He operated a harness shop and two grocery stores in Bloomfield some years ago and later operated a harness shop and ice business in Linton, Indiana.
For several years he was a trusted foreman in the Showers Brothers factory. He was one of the first employees of the chair factory in Bloomfield and spent the greater part of his life in the furniture business.
He was a lifelong and faithful member of the Methodist church, and was a man of quiet, unassuming manner and of unquestionable sincerity and integrity. He was kind, genial and neighborly, and will be missed by his many friends and relatives and his sons. Such men are greatly needed.

We wish to thank our many friends and neighbors, Rev. FARR and the choir for their kindness and assistance during the sickness and after the death of our beloved father.
Clyde Grove,
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Grove

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah E. GROVE, fifty-eight years old were held from the Methodist church last Sunday afternoon with the Rev. M. A. FARR in charge. Mrs. GROVE, wife of Lawson GROVE, died suddenly Thursday night at 1:00 o’clock as the result of a severe heart attack.

Mrs. GROVE was a native of Indiana and had lived in Bloomfield for several years. Besides the husband, she leaves two sons, Edward, of Cincinnati, Ohio and Clyde, of Bloomfield; a sister Mr. E. I am searching for info. on my grandfather. He was the biological son of Lewis Leturgez?? and Margaret Dively. He thought he was born in 1912, but all the info that I have found does not match, nor can I even find the name that he has been using. His eldest brother Joe died somewhere in the mid eighties and he had 2 sisters. His mother died when he was around four and his father remarried and had more children. He was placed in an orphanage or just given up for adoption at four. Any info that anyone might have would be great.
Thanks,
Farrah
