There is a posting on www.gencircles.com for William H. Dean that indicates that his death was 10 Jan 1927 in Owen Co., Indiana. It also indicates Julia's middle name is Beem. I would suggest you contact the poster to see what kind of validation he may have for this information.
Another poster at the same site shows 6 children for William and Julia (Orville, James, Nona, Amma, Albert and Effie).

Mr. Rankin,
Thank you so much for your efforts on my behalf. It would be a significant discovery if you could find more info for me on Wm H. Dean. Yes, his middle initial is "H".
He was born 6-27-1840, married 4-12-1860 to Julia B. Payne b 7-3-1840. Their three daughters were:
Mary Enola "Nola" b.10-22-1870
Amma Viola b.3-9-1874
Effie Della b. 11-25-1976
He was born in Owen county, In and eventually returned to Owen. His military pension records report a conflicting number of years for his stay in Greene Co.. One states that he lived there 5 years, another 12 years.
Yet another affidavit for his pension states the following:
: Military Pension records: March 22, 1887 a affidavit by David L. Osborn of Linton, Indiana states that he was the administrator for the deceased Dr. W. F. Sherwood of Greene County, Indiana. David goes on to say that the late doctors books show that he had treated William H. from the year 1865 to 1872 when the doctor died.
The last clue I have found is the census of 1880. Wm was living in Vigo Twshp, Knox Co., In. At this point I lose track of him until I find him in the M. E. Church archives at Greencastle. He as a member of the Millgrove M. E. Church Owen Co.) from about 1892 until 1896 when he moved his membership to the Salem M. E. church in Owen Co., In
I have absolutly nothing to support the following statement,
"He may have somehow been connected with the Indpls, Vincennes Railroad" . My reasoning for this is that former General Burnside was connected with this railroad project after the war, and Wm. owned a piece of land in the path of the railroad at one time. Since he also lived in Knox Co. in 1880, I have wondered if he might have been following the railroad?
Thanks for anything you may be able to discover on this family. I've just not been successful in Greene Co.
Mike

I would like to have a copy of the obit. for Thomas Elijah Crossland, if it is available. He died December 24, 1876 in Newberry and is buried in the Calvin Cemetery. He was married to Mary Chauncey Casey and they were the parents of Sarah Caroline Crossland Owen. He and Mary are my great, great grandparents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
"Armstead/Owen/Bland Cemetery, Highland Township, Section 7. The cemetery
is located about 500 feet off the east side of County Road 225E, one and
one-half miles north of Calvertville. The cemetery is well fenced but has
not road leading to it. Records show this burial place was treated as two
cemeteries with the east part known as Bland/Minks/Bethlehem. That fact may
explain why the west half is clean off and many markers are visible but the
east half is unkept with bushes and vines so dense the markers are lost in
the brambles. Two huge cedar trees are within the fenced area that includes
both cemeteries." (Listed by Ruth Resler, Dottie Parson, Carolyn Emery, and
Mildred Upland October 1993) (Cemeteries of Eastern Greene County Indiana)
According to the book the following names are actually listed in another
"original" book but no markers can be found.
Hodges, William, 12 Sep 1825 - 8 May 1873 Co A 25th Regt Ind Vol Civil War
Hodges, Rosetta, 19 May 1858 - 26 Jan 1859
Hodges, Gentry, 25 Aug 1863
Hodges, Charlotte, 27 Oct 1864
I checked for John, Silas and Susanna, and alas could not find them. I even
checked under the spellings of Meyers and Meiers but those also didn't pan
out. There are other Myers listed in Eastern IN that may be related to you
but just not those three. Sorry.
Well, happy hunting and I hope this helps in some way.

Hi, I came into this conversation a bit late, but their are actually a
number of cemeteries in the Newberry area. There are two Slinkard
Cemeteries. The Old Slinkard, which is officially listed in Cass Twp,
Section 36, off State Road 57, Newberrry, South of Griffin Industries about
"200 yards northeast of the water meter at Griffin Industries is a pile of
broken marble, which is all that is left of the Old Slinkard Cemetery, said
to have contained at least 40 graves at one time." (Cemeteries Of Eastern
Greene County Indiana) And the Slinkard Cemetery, Cass Twp, Section 36,
"Although it is a large cemetery, all graves are not on the same level. At
first glance this would appear to be two cemeteries divided by a shallow
grassy valley. The majority of the markers are on a long ridge running north
and south with the valley on the eat side then more graves on a higher plane
farther east. No monuments are in the grassy valley, but unmarked graves
could be there." (Cemeteries of Eastern Greene County Indiana) And then
there is the Newberry Cemetery which is listed as in Cass Twp, Section 25.
"This cemetery is located west of the town of Newberry, five-tenths mile off
of State Road 57, (mismarked on the map as Slinkard). The Newberry cemetery
is one of the best maintained cemeteries, with its neatly trimmed hedge,
asphalt driveway, rock retaining wall and many carved treelike headstones."
(Cemeteries of Eastern Greene County Indiana) As mentioned, these are just
three of the cemeteries in this area.
As an added note, I was privileged to make a trip back to Indiana about 4
years ago and was able to visit the Slinkard and the Newberry Cemeteries.
My families are buried in these two. I couldn't find the Old Slinkard as
it is a little out of the way. The interesting thing about the Slinkard is
that some of the headstones are obviously new, which is great - the families
have come together to preserve the burial place of their ancestors. I think
that is why the description above about the "two cemeteries divided by a
shallow grassy valley" is made. As you look down from the upper level where
the newer headstones are, there are some crumbled stones here and there
which can be made out, but mostly they are unreadable. You know that there
are family members out there that are lost to those of us who are searching
on this email site unless there is a record somewhere else.
The Newberry, as mentioned above is a beautifully cared for cemetery and
some of the headstones are masterpieces. I'm from California and I'd rarely
seen a cemetery with monuments until I started visiting the Midwest and the
east.
Now in the spirit of the Christmas, I will be on vacation during the week
between Christmas and New Years so will have the time to look ups so if
anyone needs to have an ancestors burial researched in my book "Cemeteries
Of Eastern Greene County Indiana" send them to me and I will check them out
for you.
Merry Christmas
Peggy

Actually, this cemetery should probably have been named the THOMAS cemetery.
Of course I am a bit partial but it was part of the Thomas original
homestead settled by Nathan Thomas and his family before there was a
Newberry, Indiana. The sign actually reads...Calvin, Thomas, Gilbreath,
Bynum & O Neall Cemetery. There are seven Thomas' buried on this hill east
of town. I have not been there for several years but it is the kind of spot
one usually thinks of when imagining the "ideal" burial spot. I believe the
Newberry Cemetery is called Slinkard because of the family ties to the
property which dates before there was a Newberrry. Newberry is a little
town that sits on the East Fork of White River. At one time is was a very
busy place when water was the fastest way to transport grain and goods. Now
it has a small gas station, post office, bank and little diner. Just
thought it might help to know a little about the area.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, January 4, 1911, Volume XXXVI, Number 7, Page 4, Columns 2 & 3, “DEATH’S HARVEST. Stewart.” [Transcribed December 11, 2004 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
John STEWART, son of William and Martha A. STEWARD {sic}, was born in Pennsylvania, May 17, 1830, and “the earthly house of his tabernacle” was dissolved at his home in Bloomfield, January 1, 1912, having lived in the flesh eighty-one years, seven months and fourteen days.
In early life he emigrated from Pennsylvania to Guernsey County, Ohio.
On February 3, 1859 he was married to Mary A. JOHNSON. Three girls were born to this union; the eldest, Mrs. Margaret L. BUZZARD, having preceded her father to the life beyond. The surviving daughters are Mrs. Martha E. BLEVINS, of Bloomfield and Mrs. Asenath L. BUZZARD, of Linton.
His first wife departed this life June 2, 1868. He was married to Susan HOPKINS, February 10, 1869. To this union was born one son, Joseph W., but he passed away when about fifteen years old.
He is survived by his wife, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In October 1866, he removed from Ohio to Indiana, having settled in Greene County about three miles from Bloomfield, and remained there until about twelve years ago when he came to Bloomfield where he has made his home ever since.
He was one of our most honored, upright and respected citizens; possessing in a marked degree the true spirit of patriotism, strictly adhering to the laws of our country and principles which reform and uplift society. The violation of the laws of our land and of righteousness found no advocate in him, shams and hypocrisy he disdained. His face more an expression of honesty, integrity and uprightness.
When but a youth he became a member of the Presbyterian church and remained consistent to his profession until he went home.
Modesty and dignity predominated his being. Prominent in his life was a reverence for sacred things. His optimism was contagious. Most regular was he in attending upon the services of god’s house, until declining health prevented.
His long life of fidelity bore fruit all through his life, and in his evening pilgrimage were manifested, as well as in his noon-day. Strong faith, buoyant hope, gentle submission, acquiescence in the will of the Lord and readiness to close his eyes upon earthly things, and with the obedience of the soldier and triumphant pilgrim he opened his eyes upon the glories of life eternal.
After a short service at his late residence, the remains were taken to the Presbyterian church, where services were conducted, Elder J. A. SPENCER, pastor of the Christian church, preached the funeral and paid a high tribute to the deceased. Interment in Grand View cemetery.
